Hi Gang,

After being relegated to only one bicycle because of rain (woe is me) I'm looking for suggestions on fendering my Quickbeam. Currently I have Compass Steliacooms mounted (700x38c). It seems like the chainstays have the least clearance. Anyone using something of the same width under fenders? Mounting tips and tricks?

Thanks,

Christian

Christian, I’m too dim to follow your question. I run the Steilacooms on my QB, without fenders. If I decide I need fenders at some point, I plan to try Compasses for the width of coverage.

The trick with the QB is to spread proper chainline so it leaves room for the tire to slide forward and back in different gears. Looks a bit off, but functions very well.

My Quickbeam has 52mm Velo Orange Zeppelins, and 38mm Voyageur Hypers. I would say the Quickbeam is easily fenderable with 38s.

I just did a big fender refurbishment, after replacing the rear mount, and re-installing the front rack.
Here is a dark set of pictures from last night: https://www.instagram.com/p/BdsVxA_Ff4p

I have my fenders pinched to drop between the chainstays for about 6 inches of below-the-stay chain coverage. That restricts maximum clearance there a bit. If you don't do that, you should be fine. I don't know how much the Steilacoom knobbies stick out, though. I've often run a gap at the back, for ease of removing the wheel or changing the gear, but I set it up with a decent fenderline this time.

I second Phil’s answer, and because of it caught up with your question. Here is my QB with 44 Snowqualmie under fenders. Worked fine, though the fenders should have been broader for better coverage, and the clearences are more snug than I’d like.

And here it is, same fenders with Steilacooms.

Note that knobbies and fenders are noiser.

I have cream colored longboard fenders over my 38mm Barlow Pass tires...on my orange 56cm Quickbeam. Seems like a good fit to me.

Thanks for the help! Am I correct in assuming that the longboard fenders are the SKS 45mm version you're using (directed toward Deacon Patrick and Chris)

I use SKS P45 fenders over 700x38 tires on my plastic (CF) cyclocross bike.  But, I recommend a wider fender if your frame has the space.  Mine does not; it was designed around the P45 over 700 x 33 tires, or 700 x 38 tires without fenders.  I run 700 x 38 Challenge Gravel Grinders and roll the dice.

One recommendation for ANY fender installation: use quick-release tabs front and rear.  It could save your bacon if/when you pick up a stick.

SKS, yes. Probably the 45s, not sure on the longboards.

If you need help setting it up, we could set them up in my work stand. I’m in El Cerrito

Yes, I believe my longboards are 45mm also. It would be nice to have a little more space between tire and fender, but this my city bike, and it has worked quite well.

Thanks everybody!

I've got a set of VO smooths kicking around that I'm not using, I might put those on. Going to need new stays though as I had them on my 650b bike.
