Hi,
Any rhyme or reason to Rambouillet serial numbers? I was looking at
one on ebay last night and noticed the ser. # was RB0280 (an older
orange one). I've got a later green one (RB1163). Did they just go
in order or is there any method to the madness?

They went in order of manufacture, generally speaking. When I asked John at RBW how many were made, he replied:

Less than totally clean numbers-

  Frames: 693. Complete bikes: 432

And this was at July 2007. Not many more were made after that.

I wonder if the 693 frames includes the 432 that were sold as complete
bikes, or was the total number of frames more like the the sum of the
two? I assume the latter because Rob says he has #1163.

Whatever, the Ram was a wonderful and somewhat rare bike and I value
mine highly. It is one of the early ones - orange, serial number under
RB0200. I bought it used so I don't know when it was made. Maybe in
2002?

They were separate #s. Add them up to get the total. Interesting that most bikes were sold as frame sets only. I ride # 841 myself, and agree with your assessment. Mine was a complete bike, and I have tried it with a racier set up, but gone back to a more all purpose attitude.

But the SN's must not be precisely sequential, or at least something
is "off" since SN #1163 is greater than the "total made" =
693+432=1125

Mine is RB0453.

Is yours an orange Rambouillet? I sort of (not anywhere to verify right
now) recall that there was a bit of a production gap between the first run
(orange) and the first blue runs (separate printed flyer). It wouldn't
suprise me if they restarted the s/n's at RB1XXX with the new run. But this
is conjecture on my part.

In other words, can anyone supply a low-numbered (under 1000) factory-blue
Rambouillet serial number?

Thanks for playing!

I bought my Ram in July 2007, and it's RB1135, so THAT doesn't add up.  Maybe I bought the last one ever made (I doubt it).

Mine is from the tail end of the run. Knew it was because of the mid-
stay mounts on a green frame, but hadn't thought of wondering about
the serial number.

RB1207

http://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/5191794883/in/photostream/

Taken when it came out of the box the day I brought the frame home.
Had put it on layaway at just before Thanksgiving, a year ago.

I bought the frame from MSL, in Bristol, one of the RBW dealers.
Being a shop that has bikes, fly-fishing gear, camping gear, kayaks,
etc., it seems likely that the frame was made in late 2007, possibly
early 2008, shipped to them mid or late 2008, and wasn't until 2009
when I finally bit the bullet.

Just trying to sort the ranges:

Orange at the beginning.
RB0453 is Nick's orange Ram.

-1st Change- between 453 and 613

RB0613 is Jon's wife's blue Ram.
RB1017 is Steve's blue Ram.

-2nd Change- between 1017 and 1120

RB1120 is Michael's green Ram.
RM1207 is my green Ram.

Last Ram was... ? (At least 1207 of them, if the numbering was
indeed continuous.)

Any numbers between 453 and 613, and between 1017 and 1120, will help
narrow the color-changeovers (and any above 1207, for the total).

That means, assuming that that was originally blue and not a custom
color, that there is overlap in the color runs, not discrete
changeovers..

Somehow or other I allowed myself to get drawn into this impossible
conversation! Mine is also 2005, blue, purchased at retail, as a
whole bike - RB 0716.

While were on #s we can't make sense of, my 62 cm bike weighs 24.5 lbs
with Honjo fenders and a Mark's mini rack, saddle and pedals.. I'm
guessing that's down toward the low end of avg. by a lb or two.

Thanks! I got more compliments on the bike since I put on the white accents last spring than I have in all the years I've owned it.

The superflash mount--I just ran a brazeon/waterbottle screw though the hole for the screw that mounts the quick release mount to the seatpost clamp. Hole was a little small but it's plastic so the bolt cut threads as I turned it in. It works okay but tends to rotate down over time...

Ha!  This is the thread from six years ago where I started trying to fun the numbers on the serial number breaks between colors, trying to figure out how many of each color was made, what ended up on cyclofiend.com's Ram page.

My green Ram is RB1207, and has the mid-fork braze-ons; your number as RB1222 is even higher than mine, and is blue.  Yours totally breaks the pattern.   Neat.

There has to be something special about it.   I mean, it's the highest-numbered Ram I know of, but it's blue instead of green.   I almost wonder if someone near the very end of the Ram line said, I want one, but in blue...

Also, FWIW... my son's orange Ram is RB0944:  by range, it should've been a blue bike:  but, it IS a 66, so since it's really tall, it may have been handled differently for assembly/brazing...
