Rim recommendations?

Hi guys-

So, it's finally time to replace my defective Sun CR-18s. I really like Compass tires, but in the past have had real trouble fitting supple tires on tubeless-compatible rims (which seem to be the majority of choices these days). Open Pros have always been fantastic for me–quick pop off with a lever or two, and easily reseated with just my hands and a bit of pressure. Though they would work with Barlow Pass and Steilacooms (according to an email with Compass), I'm wondering if something a bit wider would work better. I was snooping around the H Plus Son Archetype and it gets pretty positive reviews. Any experience with this rim and Compass tires? Or any other recommendations for a wider-ish rim that handles supple tire changes quickly and easily?

Thanks as always!

In my experience:

650bx36 hole black label Grand Bois rims.
Compass 32/38/42 mm wide tires go on and off with bare hands like butter and practically auto bead seat upon inflation.

For 650b avoid synergy rims as Hetres and Compass tires require hand massaging to bead seat.

If you are 700c, avoid Velocity A23 rims because Compass tires are tight on them and very hard to get on, in my experience.

Thanks for the reminder…should have specified 700c! That's been my experience with A23 rims…a real pain to get on and off.

My experience as well.

Over the years Velocity replaced a number of those rims for me under
warranty due to cracking.  The most recent Synergy replacement does not
require hand massaging, although the earlier ones certainly did.  So
somewhere along the way, before they canceled that rim entirely they did
manage to fix the problem.

I have an A23 in 700C that fits a Stampede Pass just fine.  It uses a
Stans rim strip, one of the very thin ones made for tubeless, and I
believe that's the reason my tires go on and off OK on that rim.

What rim strip are you using?  As I said in another message, tires go on
and off mine just fine, thanks I believe to the Stans thin tubeless rim
strip I'm using.

Yep, I've always used the Stan's rim strips on tubeless compatible rims like the A23. It definitely makes it easier than with traditional rim strips, but still takes a lot of time and effort and sometimes a wee bit of swearing. I think my technique is passable, so maybe I've just had bad luck with tire/rim combos (I can't remember what tire I was using with the A23s).

For the record, I've got Stampede Pass (Compass 32mm) EL on my A23.

I’m a 100% HED Belgium one-man shop at this point. They are expensive but perfecto for all my Compass tire work. I can’t say they are superior to the Archetype, but I can say that it’s convenient to use the same rim across several builds, and I’m completely satisfied with HED rims.

I've had success with Alex DM18s with Compass Stampede Pass Extralights, and with Alex Adventurers with Barlows and Snoqs (both Extralight). I laced up the DM18s  for the wheel build myself, and found them easy to work with.

If you're considering the H PLUS SON take a look at the DT R460. Ive been very happy with them. They are tubeless compatible and roughly the same section as the Archetype. Primary difference I see between it and the Archetype are that it has a pinned seam, 10 grams lighter, and has a $48.60 MSRP. They built up round and true for me (32h front and rear) with a very minimal click at the machined brake track that went away after a ride or so. I had Compass Steliacoom tires mounted and they mounted and dismounted easily. I have not used them tubeless so no data point there. Stans tubeless tape.

Edit: I wrote all of the above assuming the Archetype was much more expensive than the DT. At $70.00 MSRP and a 10g extra, the Archetypes are very comparable...

I also haven't found a better rim than HED Belgium. I don't have them on every bike, but any new 700C rim I buy will be a HED Belgium.

Haha.  that's all I meant by 100%.  Any new 700c rim I buy will be HED Belgium.  I don't have them on every bike either; only 8 wheels on four of my bikes.  :-)

I've run their TB14 with Barlow Pass & Jack Browns. No problems mounting. The style of the rim is a little more traditional than the Archetype, if I remember right. I like them.

Anyone running Pacenti Brevet rims with Compass tires? I like the old-school look - like Mavic MA2s, but 23 mm wide and tubeless ready - and the fact that they're available with 36 holes. I understand that 650B Brevets have been available for a while, and that 700C Brevets are due to arrive soon.

+1 for the HED Belgiums with Bill Lindsay. Top quality manufacturing, and they build up like a dream. I have had some tires come off by hand (when deflated) with no tire levers needed.

As far as the A23, I have found Compass tires (and probably other brands) will stretch after a week or two of use, making the tire easier to get on/off.
