I took my Homer out today on the Virginia Capital Trail with the bro-in-law (on his Sam). Though the weather was blustery and cool, lots of flowers on this trail are a sure sign that Old Man Winter is banished for a while.

Nice Paul!

I took the Appa out yesterday after work for a ride and similarly, don't think I can call it winter down here in Georgia.

Nice Paul. I almost thought I read Virginia Creeper Trail. I was wearing my souvenir shirt from there today.
And yes, Drew, winter has left here (I’m not sure it ever arrived) in the upstate of South Carolina. However, it was a little chilly on my weekly donut run this morning. I decided to switch the tires on my Susie from the knobbies I had on there to these 2.1 GK’s. And went from 7 speed to 9. This thing flies on the road now, compared to what I had, but is still capable on the single track that’s around here. I think I’ll try some fenders on next.
Happy Spring Y’all!IMG_0442.jpeg

Leah asked where my flower photos are now that it's spring.  Here are a couple blooming trees from yesterday!  The early bloomers are hitting full stride right now - some cherry, not sure what the others are (apple? plum?). Magnolias are looking great right now as well, as are the forsythia. The poofier cherry blossoms are still a ways off - probably 3-4 weeks? Needless to say I'll be ready.

We had a lovely warm spell in the bay area recently and this was a perfect time to head to up Mt Diablo. The mountain is just starting to lose some of it's color, but the flower are blooming and the trail conditions are perfect!

I did not take the Riv though, but I did swing by Riv world HQ to pick up a few things after the fact.

I took a very deserved personal day on Friday and took the Hunq to scout some dirt roads in Stokes State Forest/Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for a May bikepacking trip.  Chilly, but a beautiful day and perfect doubletrack.

I just wrapped a very Utah-spring long weekend--Friday alpine skiing, Saturday nordic skiing, and then a lovely Sunday ride in the mountains with what legs I had left. As a bonus, I encountered another BMC monster cross rider on the way up!

I took the newly rebuilt Rosco MMM on a cold morning ride in Massachusetts with the Cambridge Bicycles crew. My toes were very cold, so I'm not sure the "Spring has sprung" title applies to these photos.

Anyway, it's a real fun bike, I barely got away with chainstay clearance using the RH 27.5x2.2" Umtanum Ridge tires, but I'm happy I went in that direction - the magic carpet ride is real. I'm also still getting used to the horizontal dropouts on the mmm which required adjusting at least a couple of times after riding some gnarly east coast trails.

Please add maps, routes, or Google markers where you all are taking these amazing ride photos!

Spring has definitely sprung in SF! Here is a local article about how everyone went to the beach yesterday. I unfortunately did not, but I did get an evening ride in just now. And today was just as nice as yesterday. Sadly there is rain starting tomorrow for the foreseeable future. And I saw Luke the warehouse manager from Merry Sales! Had a nice chat with him, he's so nice! He was riding his big Ol' Atlantis!

I didn't take any photos today (didn't ride a Riv) But here are some photos of my Ram from Sunday's ride (descent weather, but not like today's)

Commute home on the Bombadil today; the temperatures have gone way up over the past 48 hours and this has resulted in some glorious spring scent in the air. I'm now watching a significant rain system roll in, all part of the springtime experience.

Hey,
The weather here has been so mild for spring. Decided to take a detour through the local park/nature reserve on the way home from work to enjoy the view over Paris. The photo looks a bit too red (no filter I promise) but the sunset was pretty spectacular.

Spring is spring and the temps as ever vary wildly up north(Ohio).  No scenic shot, just the Bomba now with drop bars, which I like so much better than Albatross. The handling/feel is much better now !  I think I may get one of those Camp Snap cameras as using a phone on the road is not my thing !

Another early spring photo but this time out in the forêt de Fontainebleau. The Sam is a great bike for hooning down the forestry trails (even if the tail is a little skittish). In fact, it's one of the many reasons why I decided to get the bike in the first place.

Do hills like those in California exist anywhere else in the world? They were among the things that struck me most when I first arrived in SoCal for college in 1973: steep and convoluted but rounded, tho’ in SoCal usually with dry golden semidesert grass instead of the green grass and live oaks further north. Around Calabasas at the time they often had cattle or sheep teetering on the hillsides.

I'm really looking forward to posting in this thread!  This morning's ride was subzero (celsius) and I'm still seeing snow all over the place.  I've worn my winter cycling gear more this year than last 2-3 years combined.  I found a small hole in my winter cycling pants in the saddle area.  I think I'll cry the first time I see a flower and I'm able to ride with only shorts, shirts and short-finger gloves.  Until that day, hope you all enjoy your spring!

Great to see all the spring scenery! We aren't there yet but things should start blooming around here over the next few weeks. This afternoon I passed through a recent extension to a multi-use trail in a more urban area that features a sanctioned "aerosol art gallery" where the displays rotate every few months.

I traveled to Boulder, Utah last week for spring break. Weather was more wintry than spring--much needed, as the Escalante region is at about 50% snowpack--but I did get out on Burr Trail Road, which ran right by our little lodge into Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Stunning, even in the cold and the snow.

The idea of spring tends to conjure images of flowers and blooming trees, and here in Vancouver BC we have no shortage of these - but there's a less photogenic side of spring here - heavy rains - and it was on full display today. I waited for five hours for a break in the rain, but the rain only seemed to get heavier. I decided to go out anyway, telling myself I could turn around at any time.  I donned my poncho with some breathable clothing underneath since it was a pretty mild 13C (about 55F for y'all down there).

I rode a 30km loop to a small lake / park located in the middle of the suburbs, usually filled with loud children and adults alike. Today was so "miserable" that I nearly had the whole place to myself and the ducks. The ASMR of the rain on the trees soothes my soul. It was warm enough that while I got soaked, I wasn't too cold. Perfect day, honestly. I'll take this experience over a busy but sunny park experience every single time.

A little bit chilly, a little bit breezy and a little bit wet, but it felt good just to get out there and see some green !!!

I recently posted in the "Black & Silver" thread that my next set of tires for the Platypus would have black side walls. Then my favorite LBS offered a deep discount (nearly 40% off) on their remaining WTB 47 Byways.  Not knowing if I'd like them, or if they'd even fit under the fenders, I bought 2. I'm going back tomorrow for their 3rd and final Byway. Yep, I like 'em.,

Lovely photo and pretty bike. Surprised by the straight bar — why a straight bar instead of one of Rivendell’s sweep-back bars? No bone to pick, as I like drop bars exclusively, tho’ I am always looking for a non-drop-bar that my left palm can tolerate for more than 10 miles.

Also, why do you take the fenders off instead of leaving them on year-‘round? Your Hillborne’s prettiness would not be diminished by nice silver and textured aluminum fenders that would add no more than 1.5 lb. Again, just curious, not judging.

All men by nature desire to know. Aristotle

Finally, two days of temperatures above 10C and I've not had to wear my winter cycling clothes.  Today hit 20C and I was cooking!  My shoulders were so relaxed as I wasn't shrugging them with that body position we sometimes take when it's so cold, and I believe we move faster through warm air (I know a golf ball does!), and I felt fast.  I also reached our regions highest point; all-in-all an excellent spring morning ride.

P.S. I passed by a farm on my way back home that was set up for filming, but I didn't see anyone famous.  Just lots of trailers, film crew, and other evidence of being a filming location.  This farm has had a lot of filming over the years, including Umbrella Academy.  I was hoping I could be an extra (random cyclist hitting up the trails), but not this time :-(

Here's my contribution: https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/QjhQTfwqSNSQD7j7n9XYwA.FtCekG8BLDKWCodMUtQRL8

After the recent dry spell, my favorite trails have finally opened up to bikes, so my wife and I went and rode Dirt Alpine, White Oak, Stevens Canyon trail. She'd just climbed Mt Hamilton the day before so she rode home while I climbed Grizzly Flat and descended Crazy Pete's. The Roadini performs as beautifully as always as a Mountain Bike. Actually it behaves better than my 1993 MB-3 which with its cantilever brakes never quite had the firm and responsive feel the Tektro 559s have.

The flowers were out and the low fog gave everything an air of mystery that felt exotic. https://youtu.be/3VhjYR5-35E?si=YthdGeXf77tD-Bbw

The cottonwoods are almost in full leaf; a couple of weeks early this year. I meant to take a picture on the jetty overlooking the Rio Grande but I missed the turn and didn’t want to turn around.

Today’s ride was the first on the new Thunderburts. They ride very nicely — seem to roll and corner as well as the Oracle Ridges they replaced — and they set up as easily and securely as you could want. I got the beads on with a good tire lever and little problem, the beads seated using only my road-biased floor pump (and, in the rear, a ~1/4 clogged valve), and the tires held 25 psi before I put in sealant. I’ll reduce pressure to ~18 to 20 in a day or so.

Also, the TBs seem “smoother” than the ORs, and this at 25 psi versus the usual =/< 20 psi; tho’ come to think of it I may be feeling the muting effect of the new thinwall ti seatpost with considerable setback.

Looking at the photo again, I see I zoomed in too closely on the bike at the expense of the background. I’ll have to find that jetty.

I saw the opportunity to get out on one of my favorite light overnights, a ride on the GAP to Ohiopyle, PA and back the next day. Started late, pushed too hard to get to town while food was still available. It's one of the attractions of the ride. Remaining on-bike snacks were dinner. I enjoyed having a more relaxed cooked-to-order breakfast at the Market and coffee before I headed out. Wednesday was clearer, sunnier and in the 80°s, I was still cooked and unrecovered from my effort the day before and had to let up or stop and rest more frequently than usual. I got home before nine and about 40 minutes after my last rest where I consumed the last of my on-bike snacks and electrolyte mix. Not textbook but pretty good two days on my bike.Tuesday

Next time I hope planning better will avoid having to try so hard. More fun to look around while traveling.

Picked up my first Riv today, a Homer I bought from Facebook marketolace in Philly. First ride has some real highs and lows!
After taking the train down from NYC and picking up my new bike, I rode down to the riverfront bike path to test it out. It was a beautiful cool spring day and I rode down to the river and along the paths with all of rowing  My ride then took a dark turn-- on the way to a Cheesesteak sub lunch, I caught my wheel on the edge of a streetcar track and wiped out. After a painful journey back I got an x-ray and found out I have a broken scaphoid!

So now I am back, in NYC with this beautiful bike I probably can't ride for at least 6 weeks! . Pscyched to join the community, even if I won't be riding for a little bit!

Maeve, you are not alone with the streetcar rail mishap.  I did that once on a borrowed Peugeot in the middle of a busy plaza in Amsterdam. Went down hard. I was bruised but thankfully by some miracle I was able to return the bike to its owner unscathed.  Heal quickly !!!

Sunday was glorious out here in Virginia, high 60s, bright and breezy. I took my Appaloosa on a route up one of my favorite tough gravel climbs and came down the other side of the mountain on a grassy fire road. No pics from the wooded trail, I was grooving too much on the fun decent to stop for pics.

Made it up to an old fire lookout tower for some wonderful views of the Blue Ridge.

I was stunned to find a large pond in the middle of the woods. It'll be great for a dip come summer. No one around for miles.

The Kanzan blossoms are coming to an end here, thus concludes cherry blossom season in Vancouver. It was a good one!  Some years a heavy rain prematurely washes them off the trees, but we had a good few weeks to enjoy them this year.

PXL_20250430_012849464.jpg

and for good measure here is a photo from my journey home yesterday from my dad's place in a small town on Vancouver Island. I rode there and back, about 80km each way, taking an off-the-beaten-path route to avoid highway riding and enjoy the forest.

Steve, That last photo is very provincial and serene. What a lovely looking ride! Glad to see they're still allowing Canadian geese across the border. ;)

Speaking of geese, I took the Hunq out to a trail along Goose Creek on an equally lovely day today.

Incompetent photo (I can always guarantee that) but nice scene on very nice spring day with absurdly nice “road bike for dirt” modeled, sort-of, bu Chauncey Matthews on one of my Riv Road customs, at least for handling.

East bank of the Rio Grande looking north to the bridge on Montano Boulevard, 6-7 miles from home in the Rio Grande Valley State Park.

Speaking of the black and orange...how are you finding the Carradice rack-top bag? I've often wondered how stable it is on the rack; in that, does it flop about or does it have some structure to it?

Why, thank you. I use an iPhone 8 with an untutored point ’n’ shoot style, so my results are usually acceptable at best. With this photo I could have angled the camera better, and the light receptors apparently are too primitive to compensate for even an indirect May mid-afternoon sun at 5K feet. Still, the 1 mile high blue sky, the river, and the cottonwoods on the far bank are pretty.

John Bokman: the rack-top bag works very well, and with the wide, drawstringed nylon neck sleeve can carry a surprising amount. It’s pretty stable; I’ve only knocked it off once when carelessly swinging my leg over it when full of upstanding bottles; fortunately the tallest bottle was plastic and not glass.

The canvas is reinforced with thin but dense foam, and the bottom by a piece of coroplast riveted in.

Spring has been slow to arrive in Wisconsin. Last weekend pal Kurt and I hopped on the Empire Builder in Milwaukee, ate a fine dinner, and hopped off in La Crosse. The next morning we rode the La Crosse River Trail, Sparta-Elroy Trail, and 400 Trail. At the end of the trails we wound through Baraboo (no stop at the Circus World Museum, sorry), took the Merrimac cable ferry across the Wisconsin River, and stopped in Lodi for the night. Sunday we rode through Madison, pausing briefly for a photo stop at Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace, then picked up the Glacial Drumlin Trail to Waukesha, the New Berlin Trail, the Hank Aaron Trail, and the Oak Leaf Trail back to our homes in the north suburbs of Milwaukee. Around 400 kilometers, much of it rail-trails, almost half of it unpaved (packed, crushed limestone). Day 1 was cloudy, cool, misty at the start. By the time we were on the ferry the sun was coming out. Sunday was sunny, chilly at the start, but warmed up nicely, though the northeast wind came in off the lake and we arrived home to a cold headwind. Very glad we had no rain and the trails were mostly dry.

Photos only. I have a few videos, but it would exceed the group limit.

Rode over to a favourite garden about 40 minutes ride away, because it's firmly rhododendron season here and I knew there were a lot of them in this garden. Sure enough, it did not disappoint!!

Also, featuring my rebuilt-this-morning Hillborne with upright bars and rack for commuting duties. I am in the midst of setting up the Bombadil as the drop bar adventure bike again. I fear I will forever bounce between setups with these two.

Nice write up, Ted.

Now on the left coast but many years in your neighborhood and know all those roads well.

This time of year weather can be challenging…one day 70, next day snow. But Spring in southern WI is so delightful after the frigid winters.

Both stays chromed or stainless? Nice…no chips. And your Waterford with French low curvy fork…the WF ‘dog leg’ treatment works but not so easy on the eyes. Will be interesting to see what those new owners do with the marque. We wish them well.

Thanks Jock. Yes, stainless chain stays on both sides. I think anyone who’s ridden a fair amount of brevets in crappy weather will understand that choice. Also it’s a bit of a cap tip to the Specialized Sequoia that I loved (though it just had chrome on the drive side).

You apparently spied the news that became public yesterday. Richard Schwinn sold the Waterford (and Gunnar) name to John Siegrist, who is generally know for his Dean brand of frames. I expect titanium to be a new, primary feature of Waterford frames. Not sure we’ll see any lugged frames with the Waterford brand on them going forward. Like you, I wish them great success with it.

Oh, and fabulous tulips, Eric. Sad to report that a deer got into ours last week :-(
