X0-1 of course!

Working with a couple forum members doing a little Q&A, it was decided the ACW needed some steel. Stainless steel that is.

Some song and dance later, and I'm super happy with the result, and the orange printing came out just as I'd hoped. This group has always been source of inspiration when it comes to bike related matters, so it's cool to work in little ties when doing projects.

I don't have many riding companions into the same rambling type rides I enjoy, so most often I'm wheeling alone. When I see ride reports, coffeeoutside posts, and bag pictures that are adorned with ACW goodies, it's a pretty cool way of partaking in the journey. One day, I hope to EARN an entmoot patch, drink the beer at the end of a Redlands Strada Rossa, and show up in ONE of Manny's S24O photos. Until then ladies and gents...caffeinate!

Wow! Just in time to be my birthday mug! Order placed. That is one amazing looking mug, and if it functions anything like the double walled stainless steel mug (at 20 oz, way too big for bike packing) I have, it will be stunningly functional too! Thanks!

In an interesting and related development, I'll actually be drinking caffeinated coffee or tea (Scottish Breakfast!) in this, as my recent baby-step healing included caffein helping rather than blowing up my brain. Fascinating! So I'll be living up to the ACW name! Grin.

I ordered this one because my kids pilfered the two blue ones from me. They love them!

Patrick

Thank you for the rapid shipping, Brad! What a fantastic wee cup. Here are my initial impressions/observations:

-- Aeropress is too wide to sit (rest) solidly inside the mug, but the mug is wide enough that coffee can be brewed into it using the Aeropress -- doing so requires punging with one hand on the plunger, the other on the winder section so the Aeropress doesn't ram/wedge into the mug. I brew using the standard, and it seems like the inverted might be awkward, at greater risk to spill? Others will have to comment on that. Not a big issue with me and the Aeropress is not what I take bikepacking, Helix cone is.
-- Feels very good and smooth on the lips and good in the hand.
-- very light (I love!), possibly at the expense of being too light and susceptible to dings? Time will tell. I have no problem with dings, but they do reduce the effect of being double walled.
-- Graphic looks great is is much more durable than the enamel mugs.

Overall, a great mug, and I believe an improvement (for me) over the enamel ones. Thank you, Brad!

Patrick

I"ve too many enamel mugs to buy another just because of some sweet logo, but this made my day. Here's to warmer coffees when campin'.

I recently ordered and am anticipating receipt of this fine looking mug myself. I'm also an aeropress owner and regular user. I've found, that with some mugs where the aeropress fit is a bit sketchy, as you've described, Deacon, that I can use the funnel, which I believe is primarily meant as a means to better funnel the coffee into the aeropress, to adapt it to a more solid fit/feel while plunging, to get the brew out of the press, as illustrated on this mug that doesn't really need the funnel to fit well, but was my cup du jour:

Glad it arrived quick for you!

The aeropress works fine if you use the base/funnel and is very sturdy. I too prefer a pourover while on the bike. I've been using a collapsable silicone jobbie, but want to get a helix.

I MUCH prefer the shape and insulation too. Stainless should be far tougher than the enamel, but obviously not impervious to damage from crashing a bike on it.

Och! The funnel. Forgot that even existed. Thank you Jeff and Brad! What an easy fix.

Any similarly brilliant suggestions for a low water way to clean my fabric Helix coffee filter when bikepacking? Right now I turn it inside out, scrape the grounds off best I can (into a hole I then cover after), then rinse it with a small amount of water.

Patrick

I struggle with this too. Cleaning it trailside has not worked well. Now I just bring it home. I shake out the grounds best I can, then fold it up and seal in the container I use to carry my coffee. Once home I clean everything proper. This works fine for an out and back, but not for multiple cups or overnight.

Got mine too! Very fast shipping.  It's a great looking cup, definitely 'petite' size compared to my normal in house mug's but I think it'll do nicely w/ my Helix as sweet pour over kit.  Stay tuned for it to star in some coffee outdoors shots coming to the list soon! :)

Patrick and others, are you using a piece of cloth instead of filters for your pour over?  I've heard about it but never tried. Can you taste a difference or is it just a cheaper/less impactful way of brewing up?

Tony

Tony,

I've not done a taste test of our organic cotton bandana material my wife sews the filters from, but they sure work great. Or, yes, just use a bandana and don't mess with sewing it into the cone shape (but a bandana is a lot bigger than the Helix needs, or a full sized drip cone for that matter). She also made me a tea infusion bag for my Scottish breakfast tea, so I'm all set! Grin.

A bandanna!?!  I'll need to get a dedicated coffee one then... mine get a fair amount of grit, grime, grease and sweat all over them as is!  Then again I did get a 100 pack of filters so that might keep me in business for a while.

Neil,

I have more up now! I just finished getting the lanyards on them. I like to have them totally ready to go before adding stock. Although I will admit...these are going MUCH faster than I expected.

I got mine today! Somehow the lanyard makes it. Also got a couple cool ACW stickers and a pin. Stickers are already on the bike; first ever on the seat post.

Very cool,

My new ACW mug made it in to the office today. Should have commuted on the orange XOXO I suppose, to be matchy, but Riv content preserved with SH in the background, sporting its new ACW pin on the handlebar bag no less.

I've been using an aeropress for almost two years and until this moment I couldn't figure out how to use the funnel.

Already getting abuse, er, love, in the field!

I have to say after a slightly longer than S24O that the ballance between lightweight and hearty is perfect. The double wall is brilliant. It kept my morning coffee a near steady temp with it at 35˚F out, so I could slow sip and warm up to the morning. I brew 20oz of coffee into my Klean Kanteen double walled thermous, then have three cups in this, all piping hot. Great job getting everything just right, Brad!

Patrick
