Great stuff, Marc.  A friend came up with that same thought of earning $0.60/mile for every biking mile that replaced a car mile.

Well done Marc. The kids are alright!
The .60 is one of my favorite justifications for buying bike equipment and accessories.
I have enjoyed your blog over the years.
All the best,

That's fabulous and inspiring - keep them thinking...

The social acceptance point probably varies in accordance with where one lives, but it I think for many people it greatly outweighs all the positive nine points.  Where I live, cycling for anything other than an ostentatious display of sport is seen as the pursuit of the homeless or desperate. I've been stopped at night by the police and harassed - they openly said that cycling was just cause for questioning as it is "so suspicious". They were incredibly offensive. Also, last year once when riding past some teens on a late summer's eve as I was loaded-up with groceries and enjoying life, one teen pointed at me and said "I never want to be that", assuming I was homeless. Handmade bike, Tubus racks, Ortlieb bags, dynamo lighting and delicious organic groceries did not impress that crowd :)

Marc: Awesome! There is hope. Thanks for posting.

I agree with Ian: the social acceptance of bicycles may well vary with region -- or even within a given zip code. I teach at a university and, years ago, I thought my students might think it was cool if I brought my bike helmet to class and set it on the lectern next to my briefcase or bag. But then I realized that most students don't ride, and that in their eyes, anyone over 23 who rides a bike for transportation is either impoverished or a total dork. Likely both. It doesn't matter if you ride a Magna or a Rivendell. Oh, well. I still ride to school. But I no longer carry my helmet into the classroom.

Interesting.

Surprisingly one of them said it was safer (most people assume that cars are safer, but this little whipper snapper knew the truth).  I applauded and told them I was 10 times less likely to be injured on my bike than in a car according to studies by the CPSC and NTSB.

Can you give any reasons why this might be so? I have read in several places that riding a bike is about as safe as riding in a car per unit time, and that you are about 2X as likely to be injured or killed per unit distance traveled as when in a car. I'd prefer the other statistic if I could believe it.

That's great, Marc. We never really know how to go forward if we don't know where we are and the insights of those kids is sure interesting.

That was the conclusion of a national highway traffic study a few years ago.  Rate of injuries was 10 as great for motorists as cyclists.

If anyone can supply a link to the 2 studies, I'd like to see it. It would be good news but it appears to contradict other statistics I've read.

I used to have them bookmarked but apparently I deleted them.   Of course when I had them bookmarked nobody asked.  Oh well.  There's probably plenty of studies out there, but I'm guilty as everybody.  Found something that agrees with me so....
