I notice in perusing online pic posts that the Rambouillets had different lugsets. I have seen two differing head tube sets among the orange version. Was wondering if anyone has catalogued these and knows the story behind the changes?

Here is one version:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc062-joecollins1205.html

Here is t'other:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2008/cc486-forrestmeyer0508.html

One looks more like knight armour-like.
One looks more swooshy/modern.

I like both. The swooshy one is very clean and mellow looking.

I'm thinking the knight version is maybe built in usa by one of those early riv bike frame builders? Maybe a custom version? Like if you ordered a Bombadil today? But what do i know.

The Atlantis started with pointier, more complex lugs, too. My memory of the change is vague, but I believe it was an attempt to keep the Toyo frames from skyrocketing in price, which was an issue at the time.

I also read an olde post that talked about some of the later greenboyays having hilsen lugs and braze ons for front and rear racks. Lesli can chine in and give us more info on that. He has/had one.

Did any blues have the braze ons? The blue ones are my favorite. But I'd probably jump on any color NIB one I found with the wife's permission of course. I like all the stock colors. Curious they didnt make the blue a metallic tone like the orange and green.

About three or four years ago a guy sold two NIB green framesets still in Rivbox iirc on ebay for a low price.

The thing with Riv has always been that nothing stays the same forever. GP keeps tweaking the bikes through experience, and the cost and availability of items affects what makes it to the product line too. The Ram and Romulus frames were a good deal when currency exchange rates were favorable. When that changed, Japanese Riv bike production ended. Lugs changed with cost and availability coupled to GP's preference to use RBW's own lugs. You'll notice that at present, some models have RBW specific tubes too. Don't be surprised if that changes due to some market issue sometime in the future.

I have a blue Ram (the most numerous of the 3 colors) and have about 13,000 happy miles on it. Thanks to a list member, it has a good new front wheel to replace the original factory one whose hub had already been rebuilt once. (The Arraya rim is still good so I'll lace it to a new hub soon.) That said, I think the first generation Orange lugs are the sweetest. And I love the color, but the bike was not made in my size. When the blues came out including smaller sizes, I snapped mine up. Not a great seller, small bikes disappeared when they went to final, also pretty, green.

Knowing what I do now, I could buy a larger frame and build it 650B, but I'm happy enough with my 26" in French Blue.

Is it my ISP or the cyclofiend pages loading super slow?

I think lots of folks are streaming the NCAA tournament games and slowing down the internets! :)

As I remember, Grant's explanation was that the original lugs were time consuming to braze, mask and paint and that the simpler shorelines of the redesigned "rounded" lugs was an attempt to speed up the process and in turn, cut down on the time and costs.
The original lugs were used on the first few batches of Atlantis' and Rams were modified version of the custom Rivendell lugs. I had an Atlantis in the 300 serial number range and that still had the original "pointy" version.
The latest lugs being used are the Saluki/Hilsen type.

Erl that's as plausible a reason as any. I was thinking this thread was responsible for blowing up the cyclofiend host server :)

Speaking of pointy lugs, I spotted this lovely silver Atlantis in Berkeley today. Up-flipped Moustache Bars are an interesting touch.

What color is that? Very interesting color.

Pointy lugs just not as fancy. I presume a later Atlantis.

It shows as kinda grey in the photo, but it's silver. I had a bad angle facing the sun.

Whats interesting is that both wheels are not touching the ground and that despite pitlocked wheels they still have a secondary cable running through them. Maximum security!!

Except for tge computer and bell, that is one seriously Rivved out build.

But being that the wheels are up it may not be good for the kickstand plate per drew's post. Maybe the wind rocked it up.:

Great locking job, Got both racks and the saddle secured as well.

My recall on the lug issue is also that the change was made to reduce / simplify the brazing and painting process for Toyo. Remember that back then the  Atlantis and the Ram were the intoduced as the budget bike offering from Rivs. You went with an All-rounder, Long Low, Road or custom if you wanted fancier lugs and paint.

Love the bike, but, must admit... it bothers me that it's locked up in a way that prevents others from also being able to lock up, too...
