A trial run of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) on the Sangvi-Kiwale route will start on July 15.

Vijay Bhojane, spokesperson of the BRTS cell, engineering department, said the 14.5km stretch of the SangviKiwale road from Rajiv Gandhi Bridge in Sangvi to Mukai Chowk in Kiwale lies in the municipal limits and is being developed as a bus rapid transit system route.

The civic body has widened the road from Rajiv Gandhi Bridge to the border of Tathawade-Punawale villages to 45m and the rest to 30m. It has created a central 7.5m bus corridor. The median for a 3km stretch of the road from Sai Chowk to Tathawade has been widened by an extra 3.5m to accommodate the high tension pylons of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. The garden department has started tree plantation and beautification on the extra space in the median.

The civic body is constructing 21 bus shelters in the BRTS corridor. Raised pedestrian crossings are being created near the bus shelters on the service road for commuters.

The Pimpri Chinchwad civic body has constructed parallel flyovers at Dange Chowk for vehicles to cross without stopping. Similarly , Pimpri Chinchwad New Township Development Authority has constructed parallel flyovers at Kalewadi Phata for vehicles to cross the chowk. The civic body has also started construction of a flyover and a grade separator at Sangvi Phata to reduce traffic congestion.

Bhojane said, “The first 15 bus shelters from Sangvi onwards on this route are 34m in length and 4m wide with four doors. The remaining bus shelters are 30m long and 3m wide and have two doors only .“

He said the civic body has completed construction of 21 bus shelters. PMPML has started deploying security guards at the shelters so the civic body will finish electrical installations and fit sliding doors at the bus stops before July 15. TOI - http://goo.gl/19kvWr
