Best practices backing up vmware virtual machines with Raven

What is best practices backing up vmware virtual machines with Raven running on Windows 2012R2 servers?

Are there any pros or cons using snapshots or traditional file-level backup?

I'm not sure what the usage of snapshots will do to inflight operations, and I would recommend using the supported backup methods
