Hi guys,

At long last, we are getting ready to release a preview of RavenDB 4.0

The first thing to note that this is a preview, some stuff is expected not to work. And we are releasing it to gather as much feedback as possible.

The current state is:
  • We are dramatically faster in pretty much any operation you care to name than all previous version.
  • There is a new studio that has been redesigned to be more easy to use and be able to manage via mobile devices.
  • We have taken the time to redesign from the ground up several very important core features.

In particular, data storage is no longer JSON strings, but is actually a binary format that allow us to dramatically cut down memory and processor usage.
Bundles are no longer external. You can enable them at any time, and they will just work.
Lucene indexes are no longer stored on the file system, instead, they are stored inside Voron, giving us ACID reliability for the indexes, at last.
Replication and indexes are much cheaper, and you can track their costs much more easily.

The major features that we have prepared for the preview are:
  • Running on Windows, Linux, Raspberry PI :-)
  • Documents (read, write, patch etc).
  • Auto indexes (now also include the ability to do auto map/reduce indexes)
  • Indexes (map, map/reduce, multi map/reduce)
  • Load Document in indexes, which is much faster.
  • Replication
  • SQL Replication
  • Versioning
  • Expiration
Note that right now there is no auto upgrade mode, and if you want to push data to 4.0 you'll need to import / export it.

Stuff that doesn't currently work:
  • RavenFS
  • Spatial indexes
  • Clustering
  • Some of the internal metrics
We'll publish the download details and the get started guide this week.
We are very excited about this release.

Congratulations Oren and Team, I'm really excited about 4.0. Been following all the work on the blog and can't wait to get my hands on this thing. I'm certain the big and bold but as well as the ton of small optimizations the team made will add to a huge perf boost. Having said that, it'll probably take quite some time for 4.0 to stabilize and until you'll hit the RTM milestone.

Can you detail on how your roadmap looks like to that point (i.e. what are you currently shooting for)?

Preview is planned for this week.
Some of the bits will be available starting tomorrow, and we'll have a public demo on Friday in Moscow.

After that we are talking about mostly finishing up the rest of the features, and stabilization work.
The current plan is to go to beta around March/April, and then RC/Release in May/June.
