Teenage Pregnancy
As the rate of teenage pregnancies in Thailand has increased
significantly over a number of years and has been unwavering in the
recent years however; the matter of teenage pregnancy could never be
over looked for these youth of the nation are the future of the
nation.
This study is a survey research on teenage pregnancy in
Thailand in-comparison to the matter of teenage pregnancy in The
United States. The purposes of the study are to study the conditions,
factors related to teenage pregnancy (less than 20 years of age) and
most importantly, finding a procedure or a possible solution to reduce
teen pregnancy in Thailand. Many efforts have been made in order to
reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy by educating youth about sexual
activity and birth control. According to the Nation Campaign to
Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy in US, in the year 1991-2005 the
rate of teenage pregnancy has declined to 34% (Moore, 1). Therefore,
the declining rate suggests that such effort that have been practiced
in the industrialized nation like US have a positive sign; perhaps
encouraging “Sex Education” in schools and in communities, raising
awareness about the potentials and consequences of un-contraceptive
sexual activities may also lead to a reduction of teen pregnancy rate
in Thailand.
There are many factors which contribute to the problem of teenage
pregnancy. The first and major cause that needs to be considered in
order to find the true essence of this problem is the “Biological
Factor.” As we all know that at the age of adolescence, all teens have
to experience both emotional and physical changes. By this time
teenagers are now physically and sexually mature, thus they become
more interested in the opposite sex. In this way, teens are willing to
learn more about sex and relationship. However, such information about
sex can sometimes be hard to obtain from both; parents and school,
especially in Thai society. This is due to the conservative way of
thinking; most Thai thinks that the topic such as “sex” should not be
a topic of discussion in public nor so open even at home with their
family members. Therefore, parents hardly talk about it in the family,
or even if there is it tends to be very little and limited or even
sometimes in bias. Most parents often think that it is the school’s
responsibility to teach such information about safe sex to their
children for a more reliable source of information. While some parents
also show their opposition against sex education but think that it is
the way that leads their children to engage in the sexual activity if
it is being taught at school (Rice, 216-219).
“Sex Education” taught in Thai schools are taught differently than
schools in the US or and US-curriculum based schools. Sex Education in
Thai schools often focuses only on the physical terms and terminology
for each reproductive parts of the male and female human body. For
example, Thai students are often been taught about the procreation of
human life; how the sperm mixes with the egg in the ovary, but such a
thing as how to prevent the sexual transmitted diseases have rarely
been taught at school. This may be result from the shyness of some of
the teachers who finds such topics inappropriate or uncomfortable to
be discussed about with the students and according to some past
experiences; some teachers may even skip the chapters which are highly
relevant to sexual reproduction issues on the “physical realm.” Apart
from teachers and schools, Thai government also should be responsible
for causing the problem of teen pregnancy. Because the Siam Care
Organization once planned to published the ‘handbook teenagers’, which
provide the information about safe sex and its prevent for the
children age 12 years old and over, however, the process of the
publishing could not be done because the Education Ministry has
withheld its distribution because of the inappropriate language on the
issue like safe sex, birth control, and so on (Poontarat, 1). As a
result of such disruption, the opportunity of teenagers to obtain
useful information and advice has been barred and prohibited, vice
versa; the government could have edited the text and making it more
suitable for readers of all ages. In this way, Thai teenagers were not
taught to be aware of what might happen as a result of the unsafe sex
because the information that they know is very limited. In the
contrary, topic such as “sex” is pretty much openly discussed in the
US and US-based schools/ societies because the subject of “sex” and
“sexual activities” is more widely accepted.
Even though there was once an argument on whether Sex Education should
be promoted in schools, however, it has been recently discussed and
the majority of people came up with the agreement that it should
definitely be promoted, while a new poll conducted by NPR, the Kaiser
Family Foundation, and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government revealed
that only 7% of the Americans go against the idea of Sex Education
being taught in schools (NPR, 1). Sex Education in United States is
broader and the lesson that school provides wraps up all topics that
related to safe sex, for example, school provided the program that
teach children about the abstinence and also include other programs
that prevent the problem of teen pregnancy, including the proper use
of condom instruction (Bleakley, 1).
Another factor that contributed to the problem of teenage pregnancy
is the “Influences of the Media.” As information about sex and
relationship are hardly to get access to in the family as well as
school. Children tend to turn their heads towards media as the source
of information. The media are things such as radio, television
programs, magazines, and the internet. Television programs nowadays
include all kinds of the sexual attitudes that match the teens’
interest. According to the research in the year 1996, the sexual
content of soap opera have shown the passionate kissing scenes with
the average of 1.66 per hour and the verbal discussion about
intercourse with the average of 0.68 per hour (Strasburger, 239).
Therefore, it suggests that sex can be seen all over television
programs; in movies. However, the equal treatment of how to have a
safe sex such as birth control method is not being introduced and
remained completely absent (Keshia, 1). There is also the
correlational between the media and its influence on teenage
pregnancy. According to the correlation studies conducted a few years
prior, the study of 75 pregnant and non-pregnant teenage-women
revealed that half of the pregnant teenage-women watch more soap
operas than the non-pregnant teenage-women does and those who has
became pregnant were less likely to think that their favorite soap
opera characters would use birth control (Strasburger, 243). In this
way a clear relationship of the two factors are being portrayed.
Not only does the media negatively influences teenagers in a sexual
sense and a contribution to the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy
however, the media also have some positive effects and sometimes can
even be useful for the teens. A survey that conducted by the Kaiser
Family Foundation in 2002 revealed that about 43% of the teenagers
with the age of 15 to 17 admitted that they have learned how to talk
with their partners about safe sex, and approximately about 60%
admitted that they have learned how to say “no” to a sexual situation
if it makes them feel uncomfortable, from television programs
(Nichols, 94). It is proven that the media is a two-sided sword which
can negatively influence teens and their sexual behavior and on the
other hand, it may also help youth by suggesting the useful
information about how to cope with their personal problems in the
difficult situation.
The “Change of Morality” also is another important factor to be
considered. This change and perhaps “moral degradation” is the results
of Thailand welcoming and accepting the media and the Western culture.
The easier teenagers get access to this form of media; it tends to
change their thinking. According to Dr. Paveena Chalukorn, a female
physician stated that “Nowadays, we can see that the lifestyle of the
teenagers have changed greatly comparing to the past. Many of these
teens tend to leave their house and their parents to stay with their
friends or in the dormitory. By doing so, it is easier for them to get
involved in such a problem if they are living with their partner.”
Thus, media plays a very important role in shaping teens’ collective
consciousness about sex and also promoting the new form of belief
(Nichols, 93). Teenagers who are involved in drug and alcohol abuse
also has a potential of getting involved in inadvertent sexual
intercourse, which may consequently lead to unprotected pregnancy
(Chinwe, 1). According to Mr. Bevin Clark, a counselor of the New
International School (NIST) states that “Peer Pressure” is another
cause that leads to teen pregnancy “because some kids will feel back
down if they have no sex while some others are…”
According to the causes of teenage pregnancy that are already
mentioned above, though teenage-women can enter into motherhood from
many factors and situations, the results of them are quite the same.
Teenage pregnancy is not only a personal problem but also the family
problem and a social problem as well (Teal,1); though a teenage-women
whom become pregnant has to suffer severely mentally, physically, and
economically, it also has an impact on her beloved family as well as
on the society in larger view because it shows the failure of the
systems and also the unqualified human resources.
The effects could be divided into two aspects; effects on the mother
and the effects on the society, which both can cause the repeating of
the indulgent cycle again and again. The mother of two-thirds of the
natural-child born are under 25 years of age and a high proportion of
these young mothers are aged between 15 and 19 years of age. (Cheetham,
51), (referring to this quotes, natural born is meant to the birth of
child who his or her parents do not get married, instead of the term
“illegitimate” that is too harsh.)
When it all comes down to the end, what matters most isn’t what these
teenagers have done wrong; having an un-contraceptive sexual
intercourse or whatsoever but the most crucial thing under these
circumstances are the choices and actions in which these teenage-
parents chooses to perform next. The effects of teenage pregnancy are
broad and varied in overall, there are, in this case, wanted and
unwanted pregnancy which unwanted pregnancy itself has became to be
the red-hot public concern of the present time as it could be clearly
observed from the rate of infanticide and ignorance of children, which
consequently is the foundation and the essence of what we call the
“moral panic.”
Poverty is un-evitable to teenage-mothers as the child tends to become
the financial burden, unlike those wanted-pregnancies which, though
the child is born with unintended act but the teenage parents agree to
raise the child together. It seems that wanted child has more luck
than the unwanted child, in reality, however, the child may also have
suffering from parent’s lack of parental experience or un-acceptance
from family members because in some individuals point of view, getting
pregnant at the early age brings the humiliation to the family.
Many wanted child are being raised by a single father or mother or
what we call ‘single parent.’ Women are likely to be the one who is
liable on the child. According to Dr. Paveena Chalukorn, a female
physician working at “Phayathai Hospital,” sees that the young mothers
would feel remorseful and also confused with the situation and the
circumstances in which they are undergoing. Because the mothers might
not be mature enough to have such limitless responsibilities that will
follow after childbearing. Moreover, due to the facts that they still
have to study and carry on with their education, it is quite
impossible for them to legally earn money by themselves, therefore
many of teenage mother have to drop out of schools or universities
meaning that they had just given up their prosperous future. On the
other hand, by doing so; becoming a drop-out makes it even more
impossible for these teenage-mothers to find a well-paid job owing to
their lack of education and blemished profile. The works that are
waiting for them are likely to be either high pay and easy money but
illegal such as prostitution or a legitimate low-paid, hard work,
dangerous, or must work for long hour’s jobs.
Single parenting has never been a new matter for Thailand; however it
has always been there within the Thai society but rather very silently
and is hidden under the surface. Unfortunately there is no social
welfare or the community support as in the United States. Dr. Kodom
Areeya, the owner of “Niramai Clinic,” said in the U.S, single parent
is something as common as McDonalds. However, unlike Thailand, the
American society provides the ways to help single parents and
furthermore provides “teen centers” for teenagers who have encountered
this problem and of an unplanned-pregnancy. The statistic is an
evident which clearly projects how much of these single parents exist
in the society: Because of the higher rate of divorce and the number
of unmarried parents, a large amount of children who live with single
parents has doubled since the year 1970 in America from around 12% to
27% that 18 million of kids are in the single parents families at the
present time (Waltohar, 1). And another role model in attempt to solve
the problem is Canada where, as Mr. Bevin Clark, the counselor of New
International School of Thailand (NIST) has referred about, they set
the teen mother program which will have the huge trailer bus in the
parking lot in the schools that works as the fostering kids center, so
that teen mothers who come to schools can raise the children there
when they have a break during the day and also they arrange the
separate counselors for individuals which works very well; this
program gives teenage mothers a chance not to drop-out from schools
and allowing them to carry on with their education at the same time,
which in a sense, is a good idea and should be adapted into Thai
education system to provide more opportunity for the young victims,
however due to the cultural and conservativeness within the Thai
society and view, this is unacceptable and impossible.
On the other hand, single parenting has its own weaknesses because if
the young parent has no parenting skills, the parent-child interaction
would be less effective and there could be the barrier between them as
well. And within the family there is no role model as most of single
parents are women, thus the children may have not enough warmth and
may be teased and bullied by their friends.
It is hard to define what is; an unwanted pregnancy, who does not want
and how come, what is the relationship between both unwanted and
wanted pregnancy or between unwanted pregnancy and unwanted child,
what will happen to him or her, etc. However, it really exists. From
many statistics and polls on teenage pregnancy, numerous adolescences
choose abortion as the way to escape from their unwillingness. Though
America is ranking to be the second highest rate of teen pregnancy
among the developed nations as England, France, or Canada, its number
of abortion is lower than in Thailand (Rice, 205-206).
In the past, Thai’s medical development was different from the
present; now that technology has improved; many advanced medical
instruments have made abortion (legally and illegally) become much
safer for the women’s health. Two views of abortion have been
discussed; it is believed that abortion could be harmful to the
mother. Having an abortion by operating is very injurious than taking
pills. In Dr. Kodom Areeya’s remark, he thinks that actually after
performing an operation, the patient must take the medicine against
the inflammation for two weeks and the doctor has to be in charge of
taking care of the patient until she is fully recovered.
He informs that almost every abortion clinic in Thailand that are
illegal give their patients only 5-7 days worth of pills, which can
cause the severe effects on the patients’ health. Because of the
ovary’s inflammation, the bacterial can make their ways into the
female organs which may result in death to the women.
Abortion has a great impact on the mother both physically and
mentally. The contradiction on the other side states the new research
announced by the American Psychological Association or APA said, there
are no clear evident that abortion can cause the mental problems to
the patients, though most of women feel depressed and anxious
(Thaindian, 1). Legalizing abortion in Thailand as well as in other
countries is a controversial issue; will it really help the mother or
will it even more encourage the teenage girls to be more careless
about having sexual intercourse.
From Dr. Paveena Chalukorn’s statement, Thailand has now only a law
which allows abortion to be done in order to save the mother’s, hence
the solution of this argument may be judging in cases, for instance,
if it is the girl’s first guilt, so we should help her, or in the rape
cases.
The greater option of unwanted pregnancy is leaving the child to be
adopted. This choice is unpopular in Thailand unlike in America that
some teenage mothers decide to do so. As they could not manage the
adoption by themselves, like abortion, unless the child is adopted by
their close relatives, they have to contact the social services
department. And the process begins with the approval of the adoption
agency and when the adoption order was admitted by the court, the
mother will not have any relationship to the child legally. Adoption
or abortion is not the end of the problems or the best solutions,
moreover in the long term they appear to be problematic.
Since all problems and results of teenage pregnancy occur, the society
and/or the community have to deal with it. The dysfunctional family
emerges from teenage pregnancy, while teenage pregnancy itself also
could bear out of the dysfunctional family. Family system of
dysfunctional family can be expressed differently in 4 types:
Alcoholic or Chemically Dependent, Psychologically Disturbed,
Physically or Sexually Abusing, Religious Fundamentalist or Rigidly
Dogmatic (Boyd, 1), which each system has its own products and
problems; some can be the social problem further, for example, the
children in abusive family can be the abusive parents in the future.
The question of how a dysfunctional family may cause teen pregnancy is
of the unfulfilling and frustrating atmosphere. The child may think no
one loves her, thus she has to find something to replace either. Birth
rate and population rate within the country will grow up rapidly due
to lack of sex education and the wrong use of self protection such as
condom or contraceptives. Mr. Bevin Clark suggests about Mr. Meechai,
Thai politician in the years of 1970-1980s, who introduced the
campaign ’Cabbages and condoms’ aiming to reduce the increasing of
population in Thailand as the country has not enough capability to
sustain such a huge number of people. He observed that one Thai family
has 7 children, which is overmuch. Children would have poor quality of
lives as well as poor education. Hence he ran on this motto to provide
condoms to be seen everywhere as cabbages. It seems, nowadays, the
rate of population is not high as in the previous times because people
have learned more about family planning along with the use of
contraceptives.
In order to decrease the rate of teenage pregnancy, everyone has to be
united as there are many things that are in need of changing. The
family is the first part that should change to be more active in
educating their children, not only about common knowledge but also sex
education and relationships; using easy words to teach them in their
childhood would be such a better idea than trying to put the morals
and awareness into their heads when it seems to be too late. Besides,
the media and the society must take actions as well; the media should
be controlled carefully and the society should not support people to
compete with each other without concerning on values and goodness
inside ones.
As Thailand is pretty much of a traditionalist country, an impromptu
pregnancy for a teenager is a distressing matter which leaves a
stigmata-from-hell on the teenage women’s heart. Pressure from family,
friends, partners and society may worsen her suffering therefore it is
vital that they are given enough care, empathy and sympathy. The
limited option for teenagers who has unintentionally become pregnant
does not vary much. The few ways out of this is through Parenting,
Adoption, Foster care and Abortion and all having effects on its own
terms however these ways out are not the most effective solution but
is rather a short term solution.
Through the compiled research and experiences, the most effective
solution to the reduction of teenage pregnancy rate would be through
Sex Education; educating people and raising sexual awareness, the use
of contraception’s, the possibilities and the all the worst things
possible of sexually transmitted diseases and of an unplanned
pregnancy.
Sexuality is what makes human life so much more interesting. Sex
allows and encourages partners or people to become more intimate as
well as shared pleasure in a relationship nonetheless, sexual activity
fulfills both personal and social needs such as the reproduction of
population or the horniness (Taverner, 4). However, when exercised
irresponsibly it can also have a negative aspect such as STD’s and
unintended pregnancy, in order, for us, to enjoy the benefits of
sexuality without having to suffer with the unwanted consequences,
behaving responsibly would be the main priority. It is a must that
sexual partners are in control of themselves that pregnancy only
happens because it is planned; people must be educated so that they
are aware of the consequences and the burden of what they are capable
of producing for themselves, for the unwanted child and for the
society as a whole.
Referring to the 100 sets of surveys made, both male and female
teenagers who are under the age of 20 years old, receives information
about sex and relationship mostly from their friends whereas the
second highest is through the internet then television then family,
magazine, and comic books which assures us that it is vital and very
crucial that teenagers receive the right information for that these
information passed on from their friends and these other sources may
perhaps be inaccurate or still too immature to be applied for their
life in reality. As 43% of the people who had taken the surveys have
stated that they know a person who has encountered teen- pregnancy
before which is a shocking sum, 55% thinks that by supplying condoms
in school would help reduce of teenage pregnancy and 68% of the people
which have taken the survey has also agreed sex education will help to
prevent the teenage pregnancy and as it has already been done in the
united states where the Nation Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned
Pregnancy has been successful declining rate of teenage pregnancy
(Moore, 1)., it is perhaps an excellent idea for the government in
Thailand to start initiating plans and setting out official programs
which focuses on reducing the rate of teenage pregnancy though Sex
Education.
The factors related to teenage pregnancy varies, family, environment
and cultural / media influences, education are the most important
factors which contributes in the high rate of teenage pregnancy. In
the Thai community, most families are middle and working class where
parents have to spend most of the day time working to make a living
making it less impossible for the family members to have a chance of
communicating and spending valuable times for talks about things such
as sex education. Those who receive information from friends may not
be accurate, sex, contraception and family planning for they are at
the same age and has lack of knowledge and experiences about the
subject matter.
The Thai government must be able to seize control of what direction
the future of the nation is heading towards. Like what the United
States have done, In terms of policy, policy on teaching sex education
and matter relevant to contraceptive techniques and family planning
should be taught as clearly as possible. The conservative views of
“sex” being an inappropriate topic of discussion must be change.
Teachers should received training on this issue. They are to be
trained to care enough to give the most information about life as
possible; find volunteers who have had experiences of being a teenage-
mother who are concerned and are willing to step forward and
acknowledge the youth that this is a serious problem for them and for
the society as a whole. The Thai government must not only concentrate
on the political side of the country but has to learn how to prepare
the youth into becoming the adult for they are the next generation.
