All,

I originally replied on another post about Mavericks support but wanted to create a separate discussion for this topic. I wanted to get input from the community about the need for a RailsInstaller on OSX. Below are some thoughts that I've had about this and please feel free to respond.

  • It is increasingly difficult to support newer versions of the OS since Apple likes to do things that break compatibility. I feel that this will only get harder if they put more effort into only using the App Store for installing programs.
  • The installer was packaged with osx-gcc-installer because it used to require XCode otherwise. With Command Line Utilities being easily installable using xcode-select --install this is no longer necessary
  • Michal wanted to package the Command Line Utilities much like osx-gcc-installer is now but personally, I think it's easier to just install them and RVM by hand
The reason I'm starting this discussion is that Engine Yard is not support Michal anymore for RVM and there are no internal efforts to support development of this project. As a maintainer, I'm happy to provide support and directions but at this point, we likely need help from the community at large to further development.

Thanks,
Evan
