I just attempted to install XCode commandline tools in order to check
on the process for a student who raised a question.

The App Store method for Lion/Snow Leopard is doing the usual long
XCode download. Upon going into XCode > Preferences > Downloads to
install the commandline tools, it's requiring (a) ADC account
registration and (b) an additional slow download. Are these
requirements new to the process? The installfest docs don't appear to
mention either.

Would someone verify that's what you're getting too? If so, we need
to update the docs and warn the Twitter registrants to budget extra
time for completing their installfest prereq.

Thanks!
Carina

I just upgraded to the latest xcode and what you encountered sounds about right. I didn't experiment with trying to get around it though. Perhaps we need to ask students to do the xcode installation before they show up for the InstallFest.

Yep. We chose to make it a mandatory prereq for the Twitter
installfest. Any Mac user who can't tell us by the 24th that they've
downloaded Xcode (and now apparently Xcode commandline tools too) will
be dropped so a wait-lister can have enough lead time to do their
downloads.

O keeper of the installfest repo: would you please add me add as a
committer? I'll update the screenshot & add the new steps to the Lion
XCode instructions.

Would someone(s) volunteer to test that the installfest instructions
are otherwise still cool for each OS? Thanks much!

We pretty much decided to go with making that a requirement :)

There are two ways to get Command-Line Tools from Apple. Both require an annoying number of steps. We currently recommend the big download via app store over the small download via developer site since the latter requires extra signup, but that's open to revision.

OMG. Apple hates developers.

Done. The "workshop" github group -- people who can push and pull to
the repo -- now includes:

 alexch
 austinfromboston
 bosco
 karenzeller8
 kellydunn
 nfiniteset
 nuclearsandwich
 robotarmy
 sansari
 sarahmei
 ultrasaurus
 cczona

And for the record, if anyone else wants to make changes, they don't
have to be a committer; they can do so via a pull request. And it
requires action by either me, Rachel, Sarah, or Steven! to deploy any
changes.

Thanks, Alex. Noted re deployment. No doubt on the 27th we'll find
there's some surprising new tweak to do.
