Dear All,

Apologies if I may have missed this somewhere in the documentation.

I have installed the 64GB version of Rachel-PI, All seems to be working. However I cannot login and create local users , or use the tracking facility. Is this facility enabled in the Pi version?

If so it says on running to "please login with the account you created while running the installation script to complete the setup"

I have tried logging in with combinations of pi, rachel, admin admin, root admin, root root, admin/root password etc no luck currently.

If the functionality is present can someone help me with the correct uname/pwd combination please?

Many thanks.

Justin

username and password for Rachel Pi 64 GB: uname: root  pw: rachel  may need to set up facility first.

Justin,

try the above.  Even if they are rejected, set up a facility, possibly by setting your browser to 192.168.10.1:7007 .

When I do my second SD Card, I will take notes and post them.

If you are in a time crunch, you can reach me on WhatsApp or by calling my cell +1 917 836-1183.

Thanks Ed and Jeremy,

The root/rachel worked fine. As did the writing of the image. All appears to be working well. The only issue is the hardcoded IP address for the KA-lite implementation in the Index.html, which means unless you change the value there you will need to assign the Rachel PI server IP address as 192.168.10.1 .

Best regards,

Justin

Justin,  are you in the english or spanish version?  I know we came up with a fix in Spanish.  I can recheck english right now if that's where you are.  I have to look at what we did.

Justin,

Thanks for the tip on the hard coded IP address.

As I understand it, as long as one is using a WiFi dongle the address of 192.168.10.1 should work and people can choose to connect the the RPI WiFi network or not.

I assume you are talking about people who want to connect the Rachel Pi using the wired Ethernet port.  As a far as I know, the wired jack is set up to receive an IP address from a DHCP, so it won't be able to use that address without some special set up as that is generally a gateway address.

Best, Ed

Hi Ed,

I think he's saying that the RACHEL homepage expects KA-Lite to be at 192.168.10.1:7007, when that IP is referencing the pi.  The pi doesn't have that address when connected to a router, so therefore the link to KA-Lite won't work.  I think we thought through already and addressed it.  I think we included a script that rewrites the index page on boot, to update the IP address in the index page, but I need to check on it.

Jeremy and Justin,

I just go this from Sam.  See the script at the end.  That may be the solution Jeremy has in mind.

I need to get some sleep before I try it.  (I just went to Spiderman with two of my kids (in their 20s) who are in town.  It was great, though we preferred the first one, which is normal for us.)

Sam's email follows:

Hi Ed, sorry for the delay. I am also in the military and worked this weekend. Just seeing the last few emails.

Glad the 64 version is working for you. I need to check BTSync as the latest image should not have the duplicate videos in the content folder. Sorry about that...I have also been trying to find a creative way to image the SD card so it doesn't image the entire SD card but just the used space.

As for the shutdown script, the pie hardware that we use is called ATXRaspi. I don't recall the actual code for it but he does have it up on GitHub. The code is freely available.  However he ties the code to his hardware. I don't know if you can use just a simple switch to do the same thing because the code identifies the GPIO being triggered, then it sends the shutdown script that starts the shutdown process, then it monitors the shutdown process until the pi is fully turned off, and then cuts power to the Pi.

The problem with the pi is that when you send the shutdown script, it doesn't shut down the pi completely but puts it into a standby state. The pie will still draw 100 mA of power.  That's why I use the ATXRaspi versus just triggering a shutdown script.

If you search ATXRaspi V2 on Google, you'll find quite a bit of information from the developer.

Sorry, that probably wasn't the answer you wanted but hope it helped.

One script we add to the Pis is the following. It auto updates the link to KaLite on the main index webpage to point to the external facing up of the Pi (when you have it plugged into the internet or local network). Otherwise the link does work to KaLite when trying to reach it from outside the network.

If there isn't an ip on the external interface, it defaults to 192.168.10.1.

After you install the image, cut and paste the following into your Pi command prompt:
—————script starts on next line
cat > /home/pi/setwanip.sh << 'EOF'
#!/bin/bash
newip=$(/sbin/ifconfig |grep -A1 "eth0"| awk '{ if ( $1 == "inet" ) { print $2 }}'|cut -f2 -d":")
if [[ -z "$newip" ]]
then sed -i -r 's/(\b[0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}\b'/192.168.10.1/ /var/www/index.html
else
sed -i -r 's/(\b[0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}\b'/$newip/ /var/www/index.html
fi
EOF
chmod +x /home/pi/setwanip.sh
sudo sed -i '13i\# Set the KA-Lite IP to the current WAN IP' /etc/rc.local
sudo sed -i '14i\/home\/pi\/setwanip.sh&' /etc/rc.local
—————script ends at line above (copy everything in between)

I am setting up using a Wifi router via a wired ethernet port not a dongle, as I want to use caching and other functions that the router is good at. therefore the Pi just becomes a standard host on the local LAN. So it doesnt have an external interface, maybe thats why it defaulted to 10.1
Its no problem currently as I just set the PI as static IP to 192.168.10.1 so when the ka-lite tries to access 192.168.10.1:8008 it works fine.
I think that script should do it. Will change the network and try it when I next get the time and report back (maybe a while as in Kenya for the next couple of weeks)

Thanks for all your help

Specific urgent information for Justin (My replies to author did show up as sent mail.)

Justin,

Any chance you or one of you colleagues will be in Nairobi, Monday morning, May 12?

My daughter is delivering a 1 TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive to a Zack Matare, a farmer from Soy (near Eldoret) who is coming in today, Sunday, by bus and returning Monday afternoon.  They are meeting at 10 am at Pete's Cafe on the first floor of the iHub, an interesting place if you have not been their yet.

You or a colleague could copy anything that might help you from about 300 GBytes.  I could email you the file list in advance.  The hard drive includes all of html content from www.GCFLearnFree.org, 90 Gigabytes of Practical Answers from Practical Action (formerly named the Intermediate Technology Development Group and started in the 1970s by a realistic economist E.F. Schumacher, the author of Small is Beautiful), folders of useful utilities, guides and other materials for people who don't have good Internet access when they need these items and/or are afraid of getting spam ware with free downloads.  Several versions of RACHEL and a standalone version of KA-Lite.

Please feel free to call, text, or WhatsApp me on my cell phone. +1 917 836-1183 to coordinate a meeting.  I am stuck in NYC, but it is a beautiful spring day for Mothers' Day, and I have a wonder mother for my three kids.

As for suggestions, of which I make too many, I will make these in the forum as they may help someone else if they are not helpful for you.

Best wishes and good luck, Ed Resor

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm a bit stumped - I have the rachelpi_64EN_4.0 image installed and I can't get the supplied admin user/pass to work for Ka lite. Has this been updated somewhere or are there any known issues with it?

Thanks for your time,

Craig

Hello All,

I am adding this message to Justin's original thread.

In my case I installed rachelpi_64EN_4.0.img on the recommended 64GB micro sd card and have plugged it into a Raspberry PI 3. Both RACHEL and KA-Lite come up fine on tablets and laptops using the default WiFi SSID: RPI and browser IP address: 10.10.10.10.

I can sign up as a student on KA-Lite, but try as I may I am unable to login and access KA-Lite as an Administrator. I have tried using the root/rachel and the other user/password combinations you listed to no avail.

I realise that some aspects of KA-Lite cannot be edited on this embedded version of RACHEL, but the 64GB RACHEL 3.1 User Manual states that I should be able to access many of the administrator features such as adding teachers students and groups, and viewing the progress of students in those groups-- what am I doing wrong?

I would appreciate any help!

Altaf
