As Paul said, it depends on the size and complexity of the problem. For problems the size of my undergrad project, it won't even cross 100 MB (slightly more if graphics are involved). But for complex research problems, it may take GBs of RAM.
If you are just getting started, any computer you normally use will work fine. You can find out with a little practice how much RAM you're going to need for the bigger problems you plan to solve.
I should also mention that the choice of IDE will effect the RAM usage too. Some IDEs are just too heavy.

Once again, it depends on the size of your system. How many modes, how many states per mode, and what algorithm are you using?
