Hi,

I've just uploaded 4.8.7 kernel package for both dom0 ("kernel") and VM
("kernel-qubes-vm") to qubes-dom0-unstable repository. We prefer to keep
only "longterm support" kernels in stable ("current") repository, so
this one is not suitable. But in anyone need something newer than 4.4.x
for some hardware support - here it is. As the name suggests, it wasn't
thoroughly tested for not breaking any Qubes part.

That's great -- I've been struggling to get the power consumption
on Skylake down to reasonable levels with the 4.4 kernel in r3.2.
I'll try upgrading next week at the office.

Is there an updated guide on how to build custom kernels for dom0?
The instructions in this thread didn't work for me on 3.2 (no such
repos, I believe?):

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/m8sWoyV58_E

If I wanted to build my own kernel, is there a guide for using
the qubes-linux-kernel tree?

Just like any other Qubes component, use qubes-builder:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/qubes-builder/

Things you may want to modify:
- configuration - in "config" file
- list of applied patches - in "series.conf" file
- upstream kernel version - in "version" file

Chances it will help with tboot 1.9.4 freeze-on-wake issue?

It looks like the 4.8 kernel doesn't change the power consumption
reported by powertop very much. I'm wondering if it is necessary
to upgrade Xen as well -- the Skylake PC9 patches were added in this
patch to mwait_idle:

Thanks for this. It appears to solve my random system hardlock issue,
along with the intel_idle.max_cstate=1 kernel boot parameter, on a
Celeron N3160-based system. That basically confirms that the problem
is with the hardware or Linux kernel, and that Xen and Qubes are not
to blame.

Did you get any other message like this? It hangs on getting some lock,
so either some function didn't released it, or is hanging on something
else while holding the lock. In the later case you should see more
(different) messages like this.

In any case, I see there is 4.8.8 already. While there is nothing
directly related to this message in the changelog, maybe it is fixed
anyway. Will let you know after uploading new package.

sorry but, heres another on the laptop ive been struggling with, Happy
to say at least with the new kernel I did get networking to come up
i have to add pciback.permissive and pciback.hide to xen.cfg for the 2
pci devices on the network card. I also noted i have to remove the
attached wireless device
i also had to login to the net-vm and restart networking, but it did
come up this time. Below is the dmesg from the net-vm where you can
see the kernel segfault,
but hey at least its up for now anyway... im currently updating the

I guess it was holding some lock while crashing.

Not sure what is causing this. Quick google does not tell anything...

It looks like everything goes downhill in connection with the SD card reader (uses the rtsx_pci driver) that is paired up with the ethernet adapter.  Does your BIOS allow the SD card reader to be disabled independently?  Alternatively, maybe you can block the driver from loading by doing:

qvm-prefs -s sys-net kernelopts "no pat iommu=soft swiotlb=8192 rd.driver.blacklist=rtsx_pci"

Assuming that method of blacklisting a driver works in a Qube (I have never tried it).

Even if that gets you past the current crash, you may encounter a similar one with the ethernet device, seeing as it is part of the same hardware component, but one thing at a time...

When you say "no change," do you just mean that it is still crashing, or are you still seeing the exact same crash?  If you are still seeing lines mentioning rtsx_pci, then that means that my suggested approach to blocking the module did not work, and it is still causing the crash.  Does the beginning of dmesg output:

[    0.000000] Command line: root=/dev/mapper/dmroot ro nomodeset
console=hvc0 rd_NO_PLYMOUTH 3 nopat iommu=soft swiotlb=8192

Now also include "rd.driver.blacklist=rtsx_pci"?  That is what should have happened via the qvm-prefs setting.  If dmesg output is still mentioning rtsx_pci, then another approach to not loading the module should be pursued.

If the rtsx_pci stuff is gone, and it is crashing elsewhere, then it is a step forward, and you should put up the new dmesg output for comparison.

I mean its the same as dmesg as before so it appears the driver is still loading

Actually, after testing out a couple of command line options for blocking a module from loading, try this instead:

qvm-prefs -s sys-net kernelopts "no pat iommu=soft swiotlb=8192 modprobe.blacklist=rtsx_pci"

The same approach worked for stopping the intel_rapl module from loading on a test VM at my end.

In the meantime 4.8.9 was released. And now is in unstable repository :)

Just for the record, 4.8.7 kernel doesn't fix my issue with Intel gfx on
Lenovo T520 (random reboots when external monitor is connected).

Still i915.enable_rc6=0 is needed to prevent reboots.

I just hit exactly the same on 4.8.10. Still no idea what is going on.
There is exactly 100 commits touching mm/memcontrol.c since v4.4, a
little to much for bisection given the bug being hard to reproduce.

Reported it here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189181

There is a patch already:

Building v4.8.12-12, should be ready in an hour.
