Hey guys,

as you may know the hardware world has been all at with news of AMD's new Ryzen processors. They seem to provide phenomenal band for the buck, competing with Intel processors that are twice their cost in benchmarks such as Passmark. My question is whether a Ryzen processor would make a good option for a qubes machine.

It's my understanding that the Ryzen does support AMD's AMD-v virtualization extensions, as well as IOMMU, however I do not know if the current Ryzen models support SLAT/RVI. I've checked the HCL and found no reports of Ryzen hardware - yet - which I'll admit has made a bit reluctant to purchase a Ryzen.

What do you guys think? Is support for Ryzen a direction Qubes is planning on going, and is there reason to believe that difficulties could be overcome? If so, it may be time to step up as a guinea pig!

Regards,
Max

hcl-report for my cpu (amd 845) does say 'yes' for slat support, but its implementation of the current IOMMU isn't supported by the Xen 4.6 branch, so I guess whether Qubes 4 will support it will depend on when it's released, and whether Xen supports RyZen architecture by then / for that branch.
