Spyder stuck in cmd window

I have been doing my pythoning in Spyder, and gotten pretty used to this environment. Then, yesterday, the UI froze and died, and I found myself unable to restart Spyder. Any triggering of the executable simply brings up the blackspace command prompt for spyder without actually launching the program. This is also the case for the resetting executable or the Spyder (light) executable. It remains a problem after reinstallation (with a full install).

Is this a known issue? I have no idea what I might have done to trigger it.
