I saw this and it looks like a fun way to get a bit of PyCon 2014 without needing a time machine:

Should we do something like that here in Minneapolis?  I can try to find a space with multiple projectors / screens to host us.  Also I reached out to the organizers of that event to see which talks went over the best of the ones they selected.

pros:
low cost (the videos are free)
the good talks were picked out so we can just follow the linked event's lineup

cons:
not live, but if a bunch of us attend it'll be like live :-)

This sounds like a great idea.

Jeff, I think it's a great idea! Would you be willing to take point in organizing a location / date?  I'll be glad to coordinate getting it up on Meetup and doing mailings etc. to the group.  Let's get this scheduled maybe late-ish May?

Alternatively, we could host it at the Trylon Microcinema in Minneapolis which is available on Thursday evenings for rental if we are having a hard time finding a place.  Digital projection and 50 classic rocker style seats however we'd be limited to a single screen (which could be a good thing).  If it is a single screen, we could take the list of talks and put up a poll on Meetup to vote on (BTW, the one on Rap Music was pretty entertaining).

Cost is $95/hr x 3 hour = $285 / 50 people = $5.75 a person?  We might be able to get one of the potential sponsors that I'm talking with to shoulder some of the costs. Complete with popcorn!

Usually I don't like the idea of having a fee for a PyMNtos meetup event, however if we did something special like this at the Trylon -- I think it's OK in this case for doing it a retro / cool place.  For $10 we could probably bring in pizza or something (I'm not sure on Trylon's rules here).

What are people's thoughts? +1 are welcome.

Yes, certainly I'm up for organizing.  As far as the schedule I'm thinking sooner rather than later, like in a couple weeks, and things are moving quickly.

Earlier ~12:45am I reached out to a potential sponsor in Minneapolis to provide space, food, parking, etc. for two tracks in parallel (one large room with a projector and a smaller room with a big flatscreen) and if they agree then this will be a slam dunk.  I'll let the list know soon if they agree.

If their schedule can't accommodate this event, then a bunch of other possibilities can open up like the one you mentioned, but it'd be best to have it be a free event.

Here were the PyCon 2014 talks featured on Tuesday at the event that I'm basing this on where they ran three tracks:

They all sound interesting, but I'm thinking the networking track could be in the smaller room since it'll be a smaller, but more dedicated group that is really into networking with Python (which is certainly interesting) and the main room can be the keynotes and software carpentry talk.  The Rap Music talk could go in either room.

Any preference on 5/14 (Wednesday) vs 5/15 (Thursday) for which night to do this on?

+1 would certainly attend if I am free when this happens. I certainly would be open to paying a reasonable amount to secure a good space.

I am interested! I have a different meetup on the 5/14, but I think the main Python meet up is scheduled for the 5/15… Could this take the place of the May meetup?

Nope, I’m wrong. I was thinking the 14 was the second Thursday.

Main meeting is May 8th so I would vote for Thursday May 15th.  I have found out that Wednesday tend to be bad for a lot of people if they have kids since most church youth groups and religious education is typically on Wednesday evenings.
