[#781] simplifications/cleanups/correctness

- python vim plugin (trailing whitespace! yarg!)
- avoid single line compound expressions (`except x: y`, `if x: y`)
- y/m/d redundant; *ALWAYS* `fireDateSelectedEvent(object)`
- `hasattr()` calls `getattr()` internally; simplify
- convert Calendar y/m/d input to `date()` immediately
