Does anyone have a recommendation on an automated camera rig? - other than the Seitz Roundshot VR, which I am aware of.
I'm looking for a truly reliable, long term system for industrial use, not a "cheapie".
I'm comfortable with Seitz's build quality - just not aware if there are others.

My "target" right now is to utilize a full frame DSLR, depending on Nikon or Canon - either the Nikon 10.5 shaved, or the new Canon 8-15.

Feedback/thoughts appreciated.

Just c to clarify my interest in a motorized head is purely for giga-pano.

Roy (all),

Thanks. I have an industrial use situation involving difficult, and
often confined spaces. And I need to be able to shoot quickly.
I need a rig that I can preset, get in, hit a button and "let 'er
fly", then get out.
It will also sometimes involve use by non-experienced users. Again, I
need something I can preset and "automate" the shooting process.

I'm not talking about "fine art", this is for compartment photographic
documentation use.

BTW - the RodeonVR looks interesting.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has additional feedback or
thoughts comparing build quality of Seitz vs. Rodeon.

LOL, I don't need "bulletproof", but I do need "reliable over the long
haul".

I'm surprised nobody yet has suggested either the Gigapan Epic Pro or the Panogear head.

I have the Epic Pro, and I would not consider it “industrial” – One solid bump and the plastic gears are damaged. It works great, but lord help you if it gets a solid blow.

Hi Scoopz

As I understand, Gigapan line of products are no where near precise or fast as the other two mentioned earlier. Not to mention the camera control, on the other hand, Panogear is pretty good, not as rugged. I have built one, Merlin + (modified crown), this is essentially same as Panogear, but slow for some application.

I do have an Epic 100 I bought 2nd hand.
It is huge, large, heavy and it is the less flexible object I can imagine.
The main fault is its project. Even if it could be a great and affordable solution, they did wrong anything they could.
Not remotable, huge footprint, heavy weight and space to keep only compact cameras...
the whole thing is sturdy, but not the final Lshaped camera holder, that wobbles like hell and is made like a very last-minute-mockup. Motors are weak, mechanics feels weak too. You cannot computer program the shooting (like papywizard) it takes all its odd pictures, and if the equator of your gigapixel is 60 shots, it will take also 60 zenit shots!!!
It is made to take multirow cylinders or partial panoramas from eye level with a compact camera. A pity that to do that you must carry a monster weighting near 2 kilos that takes the space of a Pentax 6x7 plus 2lenses.

Go buy a Seitz product, you will save a lot of money.
:-(
