I installed and tried to get Prey to work, but it would shut and
restart my internet connection at the 2 minute intervals I had set it
to. It was very problematic and I had to uninstall it until I figure
out what the problem is. I suspect Prey is not able to access the
necessary port as this is the first problem in the string that
precedes the dropped connections. Please let me know what I am doing
wrong in my firewall or internet settings. Thanks:

Also, one more thing, I have my firewall set to "set access for
specific services and applications"

Hey Emailfish,

I've also heard of the same issue in other Mac systems so I've put
this issue at high priority. Which Mac OS version are you running?

And one other thing: what happens if you run the following command on
the Termnial?

ping -q -c 1 www.google.com &> /dev/null && echo 1 || echo 0

Do you get a 0 or a 1 in response?

Regards,
Tomás

Hi Tomas,

Glad to hear i'm not alone. and thanks for your attention to the
issue. i have been unable to use prey until it is fixed. sounds like
great software otherwise.

I'm running 10.5.8 In response to the ping request below, i get a "1"

best,

Shady

Thanks man!

Hmm... now that's strange.

So if you run Prey manually you get a "Trying to connect..." message ?

Hi Tomas,

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "run prey manually." When I
installed and tried to test it, I put it on 2 minute intervals and
waited for a report. The first time, I started getting the strange
airport disconnects every two minutes and I checked the logs and found
the cron error every two minutes. No reports were coming through
either.

I believe I tried to install and do it again a week or two ago, and I
wasn't getting the disconnect, but still no reports and the cron error
was still there. However, I never got any "trying to connect" messages
(not sure where that would show up if I were, the log?).

If you would like me to try some other things, let me know and I'll re-
install and do some troubleshooting. Just provide instructions with
anything that you would like me to try.

Cheers,
Shady

He meant to run it from the Terminal, to do it, you need to do some commands (only text mode).

To do it, open Terminal.app and enter '/usr/share/prey/prey.sh -t'

then send us the prompted data.

Tomas and Warorface,

I ran manually and here is what it did: It toggles my wireless
connection and fails to send as you can see below. Here is the
response in terminal:

Shadys-MacBook-Pro:~ shadyfhakim$ /usr/share/prey/prey.sh -t

### PREY 0.3.1 spreads its wings!

-- TEST MODE ENABLED. WON'T CHECK URL OR SEND DATA!

-- Trying to connect to first open wifi network available...
** Error: Error obtaining wireless information.
-- Couldn't find a way to connect to an open wifi network!

And here is the log from console. I am not seeing the cron error show
up that I thought was originally related. But I will do more tests in
a bit initiating using the control panel online. But without fail, it
causes my network to disconnect and reconnect this morning at least:

Hi Tomas,

Any news on this error? Cheers.

Hi Emailsfh,

You shouldn't get this error any more with the new version. We added
the possibility to disable the auto connect feature altogether (and
indeed it comes disabled by default).

You can change this in the config file if you want with the
auto_connect param.

Regards,
Tomás

Guys, this still doesn't work for me. Getting pretty frustrated . . .
I am connected to my home internet connection. Here is what happens
when I run in test mode. Is there some security setting I have set
that is preventing prey from running??:

Here is the test from terminal:

### PREY 0.3.3 spreads its wings!
### Fri Oct 23 09:03:13 EDT 2009

-- TEST MODE ENABLED. WON'T CHECK URL OR SEND DATA!

-- Couldn't find a way to connect to an open wifi network!
Shadys-MacBook-Pro:~ shadyfhakim$

And in console. Here is the whole install procedure, and the first
attempt, which yields the same cron error. The cron error then repeats
every 5 minute at the intervals I had originally set prey to run:

By the way, I have Symantec Antivirus and the normal apple firewall
set to "set access for specific services and applications". Could
either for those be my problem? And if so, how to fix?

Hey guys? Where's the love over here? Anyone know what the problem
with my setup might be? I've provided all console and other relevant
information above.

Hey Emailsfh,

It seems I replied directly to you and not to the mailing list. Did
you get my message?

Were you able to check the firewall/antivirus stuff?

Hi Tomas,

I don't think I ever received a message from you. I just checked my
gmail / spam / trash just in case.

Please resend. I'd love to get this working sometime.

Thanks
