Hi i just installed prey on a Motorola XOOM and to test, marked as
missing.

After 3 days, i still haven't received any reports.

I double checked the config, and they are ok.

Also i send 2 sms with the message GO PREY.

The alarm and the warning message for the thief didn't appear on the
tablet.

What's wrong?

Did you send the text message in all caps? It is case sensitive.

Personally I would test with ONLY the "Information to Gather" items turned
on. The "Actions to Perform" are more complicated, and can lead to a locked
device if things don't work right.

Hi Tom

First I use the pass with FULL caps. So, nothing wrong on my end.

Later I put the tablet as missing from the control panel on prey's web interface.

I'm using INFORMATION TO GATHER, and both options are ON.

Still and after almost 5 days I still doesn't have any report. See the image attached.

Can anyone help me?

Tks

Diego,
Did you remove the key from the screenshot?
The key is empty, that suggests the device has never contacted the control panel.
Try the manual activation button if Android has it, it may cause the setup to complete.

Please ignore this if you did edit the screenshot.

Yes, I removed the owner's name and the key by editing the picture.

The problem remains. 11 days using the program with 9 marked as missing and no reports at all.

Don't know if the android has a manual activation button.

Any other suggestions?

If it does have manual activation it will be inside the application.
My guess is that it's the execution control in the second screenshot?

See if it makes any difference.

No idea,

The thread history is http://groups.google.com/group/prey-security/browse_thread/thread/f6b079a7fda4b9f0
I have seen times when I don't get my messages via email that appear in the history - something to do with the group settings for my account I expect.
New members are moderated so it's possible someone removed the message (accidentally or otherwise). I think moderators will notify authors if the message contains private info or doesn't look like spam.

It could be something else entirely, dig it out of your sent history & resend it if you can.

Hey Drew

My original message was:

"I tried your suggestion and the system generate a report after 2 minutes.

However, could not figure out why I needed to force the "missing status" from the tablet itself.

This is not the best option. Do you have any ideas about what happened?"

Sorry I don't know what is at fault.
I'd check this thread …

[Prey-Security] Prey 0.5.3 (Android) Not Performing Any Actions on Andrioid 4.0 (Verizon Galaxy Nexus)

Incase it is relevant - it looks like some combinations of Android may have issues with the lock/ alert/ alarm actions. It is really too early to tell if this is an actual issue though so it would be good to try with only location or network module enabled, set missing at the CP & then test again with location + alarm & test again with other combinations of modules & actions… Make a list if some combinations work & others don't.

You could search the list for any reference to getting logs on Android, I know there was a custom Prey build that provided more info but I can't see if there is a current one available. It would be called prey.log, have a look around with a log reader if you are able/ willing to get more in depth.

I update the prey to version 0.5.3 and the problem remains.

I send the code "GO PREY" or "STOP PREY" to the tablet and the message is delivered (I get the delivery confirmation from the carrier).

However, I still didn't receive reports and the website doesn't change the status from "missing" (or not missing).

I think maybe there's something wrong with the app. Maybe the system can't read the sms received.

Anyone on the group can help?

Drew i will try your suggestion.

It's been almost four months since my first post about not receiving reports using Prey on Motorola XOOM.

I even get a message from the team of developers saying they will contact me for additional information, but, so far, nothing.

The problem remains the same.

When I put the missing mode directly on the tablet, the system generates the report; if I do the same on a SMS message or in the website, no reports are generated.

Another issue I detected is when I change the SIM CARD to a different carrier. Prey should take this info to report me about the SIM change (SIM detection mode is enabled).

However, the only thing Prey’s made was crash.

I turn the device on after replace the SIM and the APP crashed over and over. To stop the problem I needed to login on the app and hit the “assign SIM”.

In fact, at this point, Prey’s gives me more problems than solutions.

Hi Diego.

Are you sure you have the latest version of Prey installed on your tablet? If so, please report the crash whenever this happens so we can check what is going on.

Prey had some troubles running in Honeycomb, but problems were solved a while ago.

Best,
Carlos

Hello to All.

I just concluded: Prey DOESN’T WORK.

If the guys who elaborated the app was hoping to compete with “Find my
iPhone” the battle is already lost.

The app from Apple works – simple as that.

I try everything.

During the last 8 months I updated the OS (from android 3.0 to 3.1 and
now 3.2) and the app several times.

Also contacted the support by e-mail (talk to Carlos Yaconi) by Github
(case #253 – still open) and Google Groups.

I even migrate my plan from free to paid subscriber to try the “on
demand connection”. As the help says: “the on demand creates a
persistent connection with the device”. It’s almost 12 hours and the
website says “waiting for connection” and gives me no reports.

I believe the app doesn’t talk with the google push technology.

My device is a market standard (XOOM) and factory original (not
Rooted) so there’s no motive to the Android Market releases an app
useless.

To resume: it’s a crap, and as far I know, doesn’t work.

Sorry it doesn't work, sending logs would probably help the developers, get them via catlog (as I mentioned on the GitHub issue). Filter the list to show Prey entries.

It sounds like it is crashing & has no chance to work. I'm sure you have already tied the obvious steps…
Uninstall & reinstall Prey (remove the device from the CP)
Factory reset the device & only install Prey (to be sure it is not some other app conflicting).

If it is the SIM detection crashing the app it won't be running to receive persistent connections for 'on demand mode'.

Drew

I need to make a correction.

I decided to do one last trial with prey (since I payed for the entire month) and manage to solve (maybe?) the problem.

I removed the prey app, cleared the permissions and deleted all the files on the main memory (easy for me, but not for other basic users)...

Them I re-installed the app, granted new permission (including administrator) and DON'T make any changes on the basic config (INCLUDING the device name auto-assign).

Made the change from the "on interval" mode to the "on demand" and manage to receive a report and even to send a message to the tablet.

The app still doesn't recognize the SMS distress code (GO PREY), but, if you use a Pro account you can, at least work some report.

I will try another tests to make more sense about how the system works and prevent to be left alone if the device is missing.

Are you using any third party SMS system? Like Google Voice or any other app that replaces the SMS package that comes from the carrier?
Use catlog to see if the push message gets to the device when you send the message.

I'm glad it starting to work in some form.

Nope, I use the carrier pack (no turnarounds).

Will try to find any info on catlog.

That's odd because I have two computers sat on my desk that were
recovered from a recent theft.

Go Prey! And thanks for recovering my computers.

Send a couple of messages to the tablet and, at the same time, was
watching catalog on verbose mode.

There's no record of the sms on the log.

The carrier confirms the delivery, but nothing on the table.

I believe this is why prey don't respond to the distress trigger.

The question is: this is a android limitation?

It isn't an Android limitation, Prey is designed to use this feature.
I don't know enough about the internals to say what is happening to
your messages.
The only thing I can think of is to make sure Prey has admin access
(check in the settings )

Hello Drew

I give prey adm access. That's why the "on demand" connection is
working.

I will give another try on the SMS feature and post here the catlog.

As I imagined, the system is not working on SMS.

Check the Log and you'll see the "don't support SMS service. Ignored".

That's why the distress code is not working.

Prey should consider to change the system. I must remember the regular
user (no Pro account) will not be able to trigger the track.
