How do I test the functionality of Prey before I actually need it? I
want to make sure I understand how it works.

Do I just report the device as missing?

The short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Make sure there are some "information to gather" modules
turned on.

Make sure the "actions to perform" are turned off.

You can then set it missing and test.

You can test the actions to perform later, as a separate operation. They
are more complicated and run a higher risk of doing things you don't want.
