The Practical Use of Shared Styles

Hey,

So I am coming from a BEM, SMACSS background and I'm looking at shared styles like "oh that's where I would put the media object and reference all the dom-modules to that".

However when looking at the built Polymer apps they seem to reference a new class like .layout (with the mixin).

Is this the recommended way?

And if so, what would actually go in shared styles?
