A couple of papers I recently found and think would interest the people here:

Improving the Sensitivity and Functionality of Mobile Webcam-Based Fluorescence Detectors for Point-of-Care Diagnostics in Global Health (free access) Gives some examples of image enhancements and HW modifications which could be relevant to many here.

Label-free biodetection using a smartphone shows a more expensive built smartphone spectrometer (~220$) but also presents a nice comparison to high-end spectrometer.
