I participated as part of the Disaster Response Team last summer after the Baton Rouge area floods -- it's a worthwhile thing to volunteer to do (recording High Water Marks). I can connect folks with Shandy from LFMA if you're interested!

is this the kind of thing i see change could investigate?  not that ISC isn't doing enough. but would a photo blog, like the one I posted of how to clean a storm drain help inform the public about this?

Yes, we can and are developing both a flooding investigation and tidal flooding investigation that could accommodate "water high marks." Happy to be in touch with them.

And yes, the photo blog is super helpful because in order to determine if a flood hot spot is truly a spot worth investigating with instrumentation, it's important to rule out the storm drains aren't the cause. So it was super helpful and we're thinking deep on how to incorporate it/sync up with other efforts, etc.The ISC team got so pumped they said "let's go do one right now"--..  : )

Cheers, J

are storm drains a thing that Miami residents should be looking into pre-Irma?

Yes, but my limited understanding is that the drainage systems in Miami Beach are impacted by tide levels in Biscayne Bay. If there is a high tide when there are heavy rains there isn't anywhere for the rain to go. You could share this, but with a note that there are other factors in play.

Miriam, i'm happy to repost your comment on joining a Disaster Response Team if you think it's helpful!
