Dear GMC,

Some oil and gas companies do pretty bad things to Louisiana coastal wetlands. Hilcorp is one.

Attached is a draft letter for LDNR to deny Hilcorp an "After the Fact" permit for Organizational Sign on for Friday noon Central time.

[also attached is our latest press release, unfortunately]

You may have read about this specifc propwashing issue in the Lens:

Or perhaps you read the news today on Hilcorp's latest East Bay/West Bay Spill:

And you are wondering if it's related to the propwashing permit in West Bay, currently out for comment.

Hilcorp has demonstrated a pattern of bad behavior over several years, in Louisiana and beyond. You can see some of these activities via interactive maps below my signature.

Hilcorp operates without coastal permits, ripping up oyster bottoms, destroying wetlands, striking pipes, and spilling large amounts of oil.

Hilcorp was finally caught dredging without a permit--caught on video by an oyster farmer. Hilcorp continues to fib about this incident, and LDNR can give them a pass--an "After The Fact" permit. This is a reward for committing a crime.

We know Louisiana agencies have been watching this company, and we would demand LDNR deny this company permission to propwash.
Deny them oyster leases (of which they have over 2421 acres), deny their coastal permits, deny their drilling permits, at least until they remediate damages and use sediment beneficially.

This is also an opportunity to begin to assess the impacts to Dolphins from the routine damages to the environment Barataria Bay. It's also an opportunity to support oyster farmers on a coastal issue. Many in the oyster industry, of course, also work for Hilcorp. Some of these men are speaking out, even so.

"The Coast is gone. And this is why."  --Mike B, Oysterman, 16th March testimony to LDNR.

To sign on to this comment letter, please email me with a name and address, and organizational info if you'd like. by Friday noon Central time. I will compile sign on and send the letter to LDNR at that time.

I know this is last minute, but this issue rises to top priority for GRN because it recalls all the struggles of Louisiana coastal residents with certain, uniquely maleficent, oil and gas operators. Of course, we could also discuss the outstanding permit in West Bay--comments on P20170138, close to today's spill, are due in 20 days to Vickie...@la.gov

I will also have a link to GRN's petition with some action language, which I will send tomorrow.

For a healthy Gulf,

This letter is thorough and aggressive. Time is short, so if you don't feel comfortable with sign on, please chop the letter up and comment in some way.  There is also a 20-day comment period for P20170138, which has just begun.

Hi Scott,

Thank you for advocating and disseminating the details on this, and for prepping us to draft letters.

Attached is a draft from my students at Edna Karr. We used mostly your language. Please feel free to give us any editorial redirects, if you have time to read this.

Gratefully,

Josh Crist
