Hi there,

If you didn't see the post, we have support to start a new workshop series in New Orleans starting this August!

Anyone have study site ideas? Or things you're interested in exploring?

The new workshop series would start in August and go once a month, every other month through February. Some ideas that have been floated around are: water contamination from point sources, wetland monitoring with balloon/kite mapping, stormwater and flooding (with a new study site).

Ideas for where and what?

Best,
-Stevie

Stevie,
The Sierra Club received an email from a guy who lives on the Natalbany River. He thinks that an upstream illegal landfill (but protected by nefarious people/politicians), is polluting the river, but needs proof. Local politicians tell him to shut up about the dump and say that the now cloudy and yucky water is caused by other factors.
Is this something a team could get behind? We'd need some monitoring and testing done, and maybe some flyovers of the dump area.

Margie, is this a post Floods of 2016 dump?  do you have a location so we could scout it?  i think it's a great idea.

Do you know if it is the site of a former gravel mine or clay mine for the I-12?  there are many sand and gravel pits still in the Natalbany area; i can imagine that several of the pits have been informallly re-purposed for dumping.

I can bring some equipment (secchi disk, etc) that can get  a little filthy.

if we get there and it's all H2S and oily we may have to do more thinking about safety in sampling.

Scott,
Wonderful! I'm meeting with the contact person later today. I will have more details then, including some investigative work that has already been done.
I'll get back to you ASAP.

Hi there,
Good idea on a specific question and project site. Let us know what else you hear about it.

Anyone else have ideas for a good topic for a workshop series? What about the CPRA projects is there one we should keep an eye on?

We'll be wrapping up the workshop series on Stormwater this Saturday with a Pizza Party. Come check out the project and talk about project ideas in person then as well!

Best,
Stevie
