A free workshop will be offered in mid-June on R for SAS and SPSS users. R is a free and open-source software package. The workshop will be given by Dr. Bob Muenchen, accredited professional statistician and author of the book R for SAS and SPSS users Everyone will be asked to bring their own laptop. We'll have an afternoon "get your laptop ready" session on Monday, June 13 at 3 or 3:30 pm (with pizza) to make sure everyone has the software and files downloaded and working properly.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14 and 15, the workshop will cover the basics of R ( http://r4stats.com/workshops/r4sas-spss-stata/), 8 hours per day. During most of the lecture, the instructor will be running R live and participants can run the examples at the same time. Some people may prefer to follow along on slides. Every major point made, each example, and its output is visible to both people who like the hands-on approach, and on PowerPoint slides for those who prefer to watch and take notes. RStudio "projects" will be used to open three files at once, side-by-side-by side — lecture examples, exercises and exercise solutions. This makes it easy to switch among files and to handle a large audience, if needed. Approximately 15-30 minutes will be spent on each topic, followed by an exercise to practice the topic on a new data set.

On Thursday, June 16, data management tasks (http://r4stats.com/workshops/managing-data-with-r/) are covered using the same approach. The very latest Rpackages will be used and presented. The examples are taken from Dr. Muenchen's book, but are done using functions that are easier to program and much faster for the computer to run.

Please contact allyse....@nicholls.edu to register for the workshop.
