Dear Colleagues,

I am hoping to share an opportunity with teachers, pre-service teachers, and informal educators from across the region.  The attached flyer for the Mississippi River Delta Institute is an invitation for all educators to join us for a 4 day exploration of the Mississippi River Delta.  For the last two years we have had cohorts of between 20 and 30 teachers from Southern Louisiana as well as Northern Minnesota come together for a 4 day exploration of the Mississippi River Watershed and the teaching, learning and exploration opportunities that abound in the Delta region.

We’d love to invite you, your colleagues and friends to join us.

Thanks for sharing, Stevie!

Also, heads up for educators: Leakage should begin flowing through the needles of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway by around the weekend sometime.  This is a good chance to bring your class out to see (a little) water flowing in the spillway, and teach a lesson about measuring water flow, or deltaic ecosystems, or civil engineering, or physical geography, or Louisiana history, etc., etc.

Will is there a USGS gauge that would show how often the structure leaks?  Could people subscribe to a WaterNow alert at 13.50 feet, for example?  is there a specific height?

Is the water gauge at the structure?

Hi Scott,

There is no gage in the Spillway anymore.  There was one in the past at various times but funding for gaging is lower now than historically.  You can use our gage in the MS river at the Spillway, which is the same one you linked to.  The leakage over the weirs in the low bays of the Spillway begins at about 14.8 ft on that gage.  As you mentioned, if you access it through the USGS NWIS, you can set an alert to be notified when the water reaches 14.8 ft (or any other number).

If you prefer, you can use our site too:

http://rivergages.mvr.usace.army.mil/WaterControl/stationinfo2.cfm?sid=01280

If you have any other questions, just let me know!

Will
