this is the email i sent, that's how it got in your memory,  it's not up on the site, it's of bunch of copypasted whatever i made for my own sanity that i am now sharing with the gulf-coast list.and big list

it's probably worth re-constituting this instructables.com article as a research note, with attribution, sounds like a nice volunteer task for people not working response, airlift, or evacuating right now

Meredith, something i just learned last night, is that my Garmin Etrex set off the pilot's proximity alarm. this has never happened before with emmet, david, or ken or tom, anybody.  on SouthWest commercial flights, no airstaff ever complained that i should turn it off, either!  whoops!! yikes!

by the way, how cheap are garmin etrexs now?  too heavy/ no good for a kite, but so much better than using a phone for geolocating. while in a small plane.

our younger GRN staff had never seen one.  i'm 40!

Passing this along.  I'm now using the Canmore unit to geotag photos.  but with this GeoSetter software, you can geotag photos using any GPX --Garmin, AMOD, anything-- and you can adjust the time stamp if you accidentally left your camera off and the time reset or your forgot to adjust for (stupid) daylight savings time.  very useful. apparently, this software has been around since 2009...thanks, Denmark. The Canmore unit is Taiwan all the way.  super cheap, super light big memory, low low power, decent accuracy.  like the ideal public lab unit.

like hte AMOD, re-writing the photo files takes a bit of time for large Canon 7D photos.

Mat, have you used these to geotag kite photos, ever?  much lighter than the AMOD.

How-to Geotag with GeoSetter – Tutorial

Before I start this tutorial, I’d like to answer a couple of common questions:

1) What is Geotagging?

– Geotagging, in simplicity, is the ability of putting GPS co-ordinates onto a picture.

2) Why Should I Geotag?

– Geotagging is a strange, but immensely rewarding hobby. It allows you to physically show people exactly where you’ve taken a particular picture.

Things you will need for Geotagging:

You will need the following things:

1 ) Pictures taken from any source .

2 ) A GPS device that can output GPX files (in this case, an antiquated TomTom 510with Event_Logger software, but a dedicated GPS logger would be better due to the size of it and vastly superior battery life (hours in a tomtom compared to days or even weeks in a GPS logger).

3 ) GeoSetter.

4 ) Internet Connection (for GeoSetter to get its map information).

How to Geotag with Geosetter:

(Larger images are available at the bottom of the post)

1 ) First, save your pictures to your hard drive as it will be substantially quicker and easier to work with them on your computer.

2 ) Save the .GPX files that the TomTom or GPS device has produced, and put them onto your computer (for ease of use, put them in the same folder as your pictures).

3 ) Open GeoSetter.

4 ) Press CTRL + T, or alternatevely click on “View” > and click on “Tracks”.

5 ) On the top left, enter the folder location of your pictures in step 1.

1

6 ) On the right, enter the location of your GPX files. this will open the appropriate trackspoints.

2

7 ) Select all the pictures (click on any picture, and press CTRL + A).

8 ) Click the menu button “Images” then click on “Synchronise with GPS data files” and select the following options:

3

4

9 ) Wait for the program to complete the operation, this could take quite a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer and the amount and quality of the images you have.

10 ) Click the menu button “Images” then click on save changes.

11 ) Done! Your images are now geotagged!

12 ) *Optional Step* Select all the images again (See step 6) and click “Images” button and “Export to google earth”.
