[Play 2.5] Getting ChannelException when adding Google cloud client library to

Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: io.netty.channel.DefaultChannelId.newInstance()Lio/netty/channel/DefaultChannelId;

I added the depedency like this in my build.sbt file

libraryDependencies += "com.google.cloud" % "google-cloud" % "0.3.0"

This only happens when I add the Google cloud library. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the library or the framework

I just encountered this exact same issue. Simply adding a dependency for a Google Cloud SDK causes our Play app to be unable to startup. Our error is similar. It seems to be some type of library incompatibility but I haven't debugged far enough to figure out exactly what library. It could be a transitive dependency issue.

Looks to be a problem caused by the dependency on io.grpc, specifically grpc-netty. I'm going to see what I can do about that transitive dependency, but I don't think I can exclude it as it appears essential for their RPC functionality.
