so just real quick I been in this email group for years ever since i went to a meeting when i was still in middle school and now im 24 and im finally going to school for my degree in cyber sec. (a very long overdue task)

But what i was wondering is how did you get to where you are now? Did you start with help desk? Or did you get lucky and get your job right after school?

I guess what im trying to say is, my goal is to work as a system admin ( something along those lines) for a major gaming company IE ( Riot, Blizzard, ID, Valve...ex) or even scandisk, Intel. What tips would you have for someone to get into these jobs or shit any IT jobs just to start.

(I don't have a job in Info Sec)

That sounds like a really interesting "what job did you get out of college, and how did that get you where you are today?"

I wonder if you couldn't find out who those people are who have the job you want right now, and take a look at their resumes. I wonder if LinkedIn would have that kind of info.

I always assumed people love to talk about themselves, and would jump at the opportunity to share their origin story, but perhaps the Info Sec community is a more paranoid lot.

If you're looking to get into Info Security I know that Wells Fargo is always looking for those with degrees for internships then convert them to full time. If you'd like I can research further details for you. Alternatively you can always research on their careers section. I know a buddy of mine just recently got a job there as a Network Segmentation Analyst with pretty competitive pay, but he's already been working in the industry. Again, let me know if I can be of assistance in any way and to echo what twitterkilo stated earlier that is very true and well said sure many of us in the Info Sec area are paranoid, but that comes with the territory :P.

I recommend getting some certifications while attending school so you can get a relevant job before you graduate. I didn't go to school for programming or security but because I had friends in IT, I listened to their complaints and started writing software for them (by contract) that they didn't have the time to do. Now my full time job is writing medical software and handling security for some parts of hospital servers. So I highly recommend getting to know people who have a job you want, learn as much as you can, and be as helpful as you can.

There isn't a lack of jobs in this industry, but making connections before you finish school will put you ahead of your peers and keeping up on new technology and trends will show people that you have a passion and knowledge of the industry.

If you're interested in security, most of the people I know in the industry say that it is hard to find people with a good knowledge of Linux, so I would concentrate on that too.
