Hello,

My name is Edward Haywood. I am a French TV journalist for the weekly international affairs program "L'Effet Papillon" (The Butterfly Effect) that airs on the Canal Plus channel in France.

I am currently working on a 12 minute documentary about the rise of driverless cars in Phoenix and what it will mean for the future of transport and urban planning.

I also want to talk about the fact that driverless cars are of course controlled by software and that software could be potentially hacked.

I am looking for someone who could explain to me how a car software (LIDAR in particular) could be hacked.

I was wondering if you or someone you know could talk to me about this.

I remain at your disposal should you have further questions.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Best regards,

Edward

Some coworkers and I have been brainstorming what we've called "The Wile E. Coyote Attack". Basically, you put some LIDAR absorbent material in front of the car to try and trick it into thinking the road keeps on going.

Okay, that's awesome, if only for the name. I don't know enough about LIDAR to determine if that's even feasible, but I love the though.

I wonder if 'VantaBlack' would be LIDAR absorbent enough?  It's pretty darn black with a nano-coating.

Alternatively to hacking LIDAR anybody could put special graffiti on signs and that might be enough to really cause some accidents.
