TalkBack not reading links in PhoneGap app

I am using Android Lollipop and PhoneGap to make an app. The links work in the page but when I use TalkBack the links are read as static text and don't say that it is a link. I have tried using role="link", aria-label="News link" and title="News link" without success. The only thing I can do is set the role to button, role="button", and Talkback says "News Button". It works fine Android 4.x, is there something I have to change in the config.xml to make this work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
