my application can not connect to the server in sleeping mode and then stop working

Dear Sirs,

I am building a GPS Android application, which poll data from the server.

and it works well and keep polling from the server for a complete 10 minutes 

but when, I put the phone in sleeping mode it lose the connection to the server and give me an error message that it can not connect to server and then stop working

So please help me to do the following

1 - I wish, I could increase my Timeout to 10 minutes in sleeping mode so, I receive no error message

OR

2 - I wish, I could stop the error message and resume next
