Hello everyone :) I trust everyone is having a great week.

My family is considering moving to CenturyLink Fiber from Comcast and I was curious about the experience people have had with it.  Yes, I can sign up for the 1GB package, but that seems a little extreme.

Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Cheers.

I switched from Comcast to CenturyLink sometime last year.  Costs are down, speeds are up (I decided 100Mbps was quite sufficient), outages are fewer.

I had one significant issue that turned out, after a site visit, to be a loose cable.  (Plus, uh, one other incident where I forgot to plug my router back in...)

Do you recommend buying the modem or leasing it?

Thank you for the feedback on this.

I bought one long enough ago to have made it worth it. Used. eBay. Works fine.

Also, watch out for CenturyLink price changes after the introductory period. My service went from $39 to $79 after a year. When I noticed it, I called them up and simply asked if there was a cheaper plan. I’m back down to $39 with the same level of service (but with a two year commitment).

I chose to lease because it seemed easier than researching, sourcing, and supporting hardware.  If you want to do anything (and I do mean *anything*) fancy with your router, you should probably BYO; the embedded admin interface is crap.

The all-in-one router/modems are bad period.  I bought a nice modem and a nice router and saw immediate improvements in speed and connection quality/range while being on the same plan.  I spent about $300 and did maybe 30 minutes looking up compatible modems and routers.  YMMV but I'm happy I'm not paying $60/year in perpetuity for a modem that bottlenecks my "high speed" internet.

It's a mixed bag, I guess. I have great Internet reliability/performance now that I've taken my decent-quality Buffalo router out of the chain so that I'm just using the modem/router provided by Comcast.

The router's Admin. interface is a bit limited, but I've been able to work around that. I can forward a port, but I can't re-map the port number. I was able to work around that by convincing OS X to handle SSH connections on an alternate port number so I don't need the port number to be re-mapped. It works like a charm.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. Much appreciated.

As an update, I think we are going to roll with the leased modem and configure it to passthrough to our apple wireless base station.

Going to start with the 100MB package as well.
