Hi I'm brand new to Panoramio, & I am naturally worried about image piracy :(

Anyway I've just uploaded 4 images, & entered 3 of them into the latest contest but I forgot to type in the jpg file properties, & tick the read only attributes box !

It's very important to me to protect my images, If I delete the 4 uploads, & replace them with read only files what will happen to the 3 uploads entered into the competition ? please advise.

Thanks .. Phil

I don't know much about the features of a jpg. file and its protection if you tick the "read only attributes box" but I guess that if someone wants to pirate your photo in the web that protection is not enough. In other words, it seems to be very easy to pirate images on any website.

There are some users on Panoramio who have computer savvy and surely will advise you on this very important subject.

Regarding copyright please read the the Help File, principally the following point: //www.panoramio.com/help/#copyright

Basically , if someone can see it they can copy it. Even watermarks aren't impossible to remove in Photoshop.

For anyone who is worried about having their photos stolen there is only one piece of advice ...... don't post them anywhere on the internet.

The read-only indicator won't make any difference to Panoramio, it would only prevent you from over-writing the original image on your local machine.

One thing you could do is reduce the image sizes you upload, as long as you don't drop below 500 pixels in both directions. (I tend to put the shortest edge to about 600 pixels.) You can also reduce the quality of the jpg to about 10.

This will not stop people being able to save your images to their own PC, but it will reduce the chances of them using them for any other purpose.

Thanks everyone for your informative replies :D

Perhaps it was a little silly of me to think I could deter image theft this way  .. what I think I'll do is simply upload a smaller size for any really treasured pix.

In the meantime should I delete, & re-upload downsized jpgs what will happen to my 3 original competition entries ?
Sorry to be a pain .. Phil.

Yup, I tried it... and it works...

Seriously... you can always do a print screen and copy/paste it into a new file. It is impossible to protect your files completly. So many worldwide media companies tried it, but the copying still continues...

Deleting them will remove them from the competition (along with the votes) too I guess, so you better leave them as they are.

Most likely, when it occurs, it will not be the last time if someone decides to use your photo's without asking...

Screenshots will only have a resolution of 72dpi or 96dpi. But if it has been loaded to the screen, there is a copy at the harddisk already with the original file ;)

My hint is to reduce the image resolution so that it can not be used for printing. Also you can resize the image somewhat to make it smaller. This will also help to prevent abuse. Both steps are reducing the filesize (good for Panoramio too) and are not reversible in JPEG.
But if you will be sure that no one can take your photos there is only the way said before not to publish them.
