Sometimes you see a photo from someone else, and you think that:"Hey, I have one like that!". Sometimes theirs is better. Sometimes theirs is what you wanted yours to be like. Sometimes they are similar in subject, but the mood is different.

So here's the game. You post two photos. One is yours. One is someone elses. The photos are visually similar in some way -- maybe you can tell us why you chose them.

My photo is on the left. I don't know why the view count is so low -- is it really that boring? But the one on the right -- wow, I like it a lot! I wish I could find that thing and take a picture of it too!

When it comes to similarity, these two will be hard to beat, because they were evidently taken at the same instant from the same tourist boat. Mine has been cropped for a closer view in the thumbnail. It was even more similar before cropping. When I first discovered the other one in Panoramio, I thought for a moment it was mine!

Let's start:
my photo (Ukraine)

And this one - from Italy

Flowers are different (1-buddleja, 2-lavandula?) but looks almost identically but butterflies are absolutely identical. I saw such butterfly first, therefore make a photo.

Reflections in a Lyon's big store windows (but not same side).
First one is mine, the other one by Annick Restle.

I took my pic after, but posted it before (that's the first pic I took and posted on Panoramio the same day).

Great new game, Nawitka ! Thanks.

Jay Reeve -- that is truly remarkable! (Yours is better, the cropping makes all the difference!) I see I will have to search harder to match some of mine.

Here is one that I found a week ago. First is my striped crocus 'Pickwick' in my own garden, the second is a native blue flag iris in Ontario by bentnailz .

well, I know I have a lot of the same things posted by others, but I have to post this, because I just saw this photo by Volkan Yuksel on the 'all' tab for Boston,

and I thought it was this one I posted a few days ago!

added the day after I first made this post:

after looking at Volkan's photo, I went back to the original downloads of the photos I'd taken that night, and found this one, taken at the same location where Volkan located his photo!
I didn't crop it at all, but it frames just about the exact same buildings as on Volkan's photo. It seems that just 3 days apart, we took close to identical photos from pretty much the exact same spot!

then Volkan posted this shot:

and I countered with this one, taken less than an hour and a half before his!

I think it's inevitable that many pictures of well-photographed tourist locations will be virtually identical, for example the Rialto Bridge or the Eiffel Tower. However, what I find fascinating is where two or more photographers have attempted the same 'unique' composition, or have captured moving subjects at exactly the same moment to achieve a particular effect. It confirms my belief that having an 'eye' for a photograph could be instinctive among certain people, and might even be something that can be inherited?

I'm also hugely impressed by people who take their instinct for composition one step further and produce totally unique images like this brilliant one by einstijn, which is not only smart and comical but also passes comment on the rampant tourist souvenir culture that surrounds this monument:

..and I gnash my teeth and tear my hair and wail "Why didn't I think of that when I was there?"

That is what I love about Panoramio - it inspires us all to greater things ;-)

The situations where subject matter is the same are very interesting.
This slightly bizarre example is of a fairly ordinary rock (smaller than 5 metres on a side) that three of us have all decided was worthy of our time :D

Sagrada Familia from La Pedrera, Barcelona by Josep Maria Alegre with what looks like a wide angle lens - nice shot. I hope Josep didn't have to wait as long as I did to get it - the place was swarming with people.

Coincidentally the same shot also appeared on the November page of the 2007 Gaudi/Barcelona calendar that my wife bought as a souvenir and put up in our kitchen!

This is my photograph of The Blowhole.

This is a photograph of The Blowhole by jharp.

I actually prefer jharp's photo, as it shows a greater depth of field and has better composition. The coral beaches on this part of the small Caribbean island are sharp, and one false move is certain to draw blood on unprotected skin. Ouch!

These two photographs are of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming USA.

This is my photo, taken during an early season cold-snap on October 5, 2005. The snowpack was already beginning to form in the higher elevations. The steam from the springs is visible thanks to the cold air.

This photograph, taken by Uwe Stuermer, is a wider-angle view of the springs. The warmer weather conditions (no snow yet!) make the steam more difficult to discern, allowing the beautiful colors to appear more vivid.

These show the roughly the same view towards Gloucester UK about two hours apart on the same evening in mid October...

Interesting topic!!

Here are two views of the Flatiron building taken from the Empire State building at night: first mine, then one taken by Graffitie.

What's more, we both have 1200-something views, to make it even more similar :)

Don, those are all beautiful, but it looks like you were the only one to step outside and take a slightly different shot!

Here are two more. Anyone who goes to the Vancouver Aquarium can get this shot of Moon Jellyfish. The same setup is also found in Monterey Bay, California, Japan, and France. Mine first, then another at the Vancouver Aquarium (I think the baby adds a nice touch!)

Now Monterey Bay and La Rochelle France
