Hi there,

A major update has been done on TI PPA. Please read the below e-mail especially for upgrade.
If you do not have installed the TI release PPA, please refer to New installation procedure.

New installation procedure:
  1- Add TI OMAP release PPA:
    $ sudo su -
    # export http_proxy=<your proxy if any>
    # export https_proxy=<your proxy if any>
    # add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release
  2- Perform the upgrade:
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras
  3- You can re-run a dist-upgrade for safety at the end, then reboot

Update procedure:
1- Perform the upgrade:
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Post Installation Important Information:
* after the installation/update, it is advised to log as default user and to execute:
    # On Panda 4430:
    $ /usr/bin/alsaucm -c Panda set _verb HiFi
    # On PandaES 4460:
    $ /usr/bin/alsaucm -c PandaES set _verb HiFi

* You need to force installation of new bootloaders (if any) through command:
    $ sudo /usr/sbin/flash-kernel --update-bootloader

* It is advised to use Ubuntu 2D instead of Ubuntu (3D) default UI. Nevertheless, main compiz issues have been fixed.

* In some cases, you might need to re-install dkms packages: after reboot,  check if omapdrm_pvr module is loaded, if not execute following command before to reboot:
    $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms

New/Fixed in December 2012 release:
 * Kernel bug fixes:
- Rebase on Linux 3.4.23
 * Gstreamer and Graphics bug fixes
 * M-JPEG decoder support

Playing with GBM/KMS:
You just need to install following packages:
$ sudo apt-get install libwayland0 libgbm1

You can test now the kmscube test apps:
$ git clone git://github.com/robclark/kmscube.git

go into kmscube dir:
$ sudo apt-get install autoconf autotools-dev libtool libdrm-dev libwayland-dev libgbm-dev ubuntu-omap4-extras-graphics-dev
$ ./autogen.sh
$ make

Reboot with text in command line or stop lightdm with "sudo service lightdm stop"
If you have booted with text in bootargs, first execute "sudo pvrsrvinit", then execute:
$ sudo ./kmscube

Misc:
 * Dual screen support on HDMI and DVI: you need to disable HWcursor in xorg.conf file, please edit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-omap.conf and add in section Device:
Option "HWcursor" "false"

Known Issues:
* BT is not supported - shall be fixed next month.
* Black screen issue on some HW - workaround: Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 or boot with screen un-plugged, plug it after 1 minute. Issue under investigation.

Support:
updates for bug fixes in the PPA, so make sure to keep your system up-to-date!

Reference/Reminder:

The 'top-level' ubuntu-omap-extras will install the following packages:
 - ubuntu-omap-extras-multimedia: another meta package that installs all the requires packages for MM use case:
   * GST, a modified version still compatible with all Ubuntu apps such as totem
   * gst-ducati and libDCE the main components that bring MM h/w acceleration into the system
 - ubuntu-omap-extras-graphics: meta package that pulls in all GFX components including new X11 driver (binary blob) and SGX kernel module (source using DKMS to build)
 - ubuntu-omap-extras-config: some config scripts to set some permission issues, and to ensure that the Ducati firmware is loaded at boot time by upstart.

This release comes with the following major changes:
 - DCE interface for the h/w accelerated codecs - already there in 11.10
 - migration to rpmsg driver (aka syslink3, see http://lwn.net/Articles/448562/ and http://omappedia.org/wiki/Category:RPMsg)
 - DRI2 extension for Video support (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTgxOQ)
 - migration to a new open source X11 driver for OMAP (http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-omap/ )
 - a new GST video-sink: dri2videosink to display video through the SGX (instead of v4l2sink). For more information, see https://wiki.linaro.org/OfficeofCTO/MemoryManagement?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=linux-video.pdf
 - Linux 3.4 kernel, Ubuntu kernel will be replaced. This kernel is largely based of Linaro kernel, and sources are available here: http://dev.omapzoom.org/?p=integration/kernel-ubuntu.git. Linux-image-<version> package version correspond to a tag ti-ubuntu-<kernel version>  in this tree.
 - ...

Hi Xavier,

Many thanks for this update. It makes the system a lot more stable.

I can still break it though... However it takes a lot longer to fail and fails in a different manner.

I have quite a long backtrace but it starts out with:

So, what can I do to help debug this? I can trivially provide the full backtrace and can do pretty much anything else that could help.

Xavier, you forgot to add to the install instructions changing the boot.script "vram=40M mem=456M@0x80000000 mem=512M@0xA0000000"  part:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/pandaboard/7DLabw7amBg/ofeX-SOsdw4J

Please add it after the sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras command, before reboot, or else people will run into trouble.

Hi,

I've installed ubuntu and the extras packages as described (including changing the boot args), but when I run "sudo totem <movie filename>" it gets stuck at "libdce-x11.c:64: dce_auth_x11 info: attempting to open X11 connection"

Shouldn't it be possible to do the above? I've tried with a couple of different movie files. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have a new problem:
With the old Ubuntu 11.x HW acceleration works fine, but on a new
installed 12.04 with the ti-ppa it does not:

Using a simple pipeline like
gst-launch filesrc
location=/home/erik/Videos/big_buck_bunny_720p_H264_AAC_25fps_3400K.MP4 !
decodebin ! fakesin
it hangs just after
libdce-x11.c:64: dce_auth_x11 info: attempting to open X11 connection

Now I just got the chance to test it this image in another Pandaboard:
It worked!
Back in my Pandaboard it fails again.

The Pandaboard that fails is a OMAP4430 ES2.2.
The Pandaboard that works is a OMAP4430 ES2.3.

Any ideas?

greetings,
Erik

Ah, so that explains why my hardware acceleration is not working. I have a 4430 rev 2 board... Any solution in sight for this?

I get the same problem with HW acceleration:
Playing any H264 encoded MKV, with totem or totem from command line results in a slide show. I have followed all the instructions right and installed the extras.
Board = Pandaboard Rev A2
SD card = SanDisk Extreme Class 10 4GB
From command line, every time I play a video with totem, with every possible videosink (tried all: ones from gstreamer-options + pvr + dri2 videosinks ), I get same message:

libdce-x11.c:64:    dce_auth_x11    info: attempting to open X11 connection
and slide show with H264 media. I do get images and sound, but not video. There is no HW - cat /proc/cpuinfo indicates the CPU is at 1 GHz frequency. It is also fully loaded.
Would it possible at all to have HW on A2 ?

for those interested, we had a long chat with Erik on IRC about this
issue. you can check the log:
http://pandaboard.org/pbirclogs/index.php?date=2012-12-19#T21:14:28

basically, we found out that the IVAHD power management as it was
recently implemented in the DCE firmware, is not working with 4430
ES2.2. The exact reason why is not determined yet, and we will debug
it further.. however I generated a firmware with IVAHD power
management disabled and Erik confirmed that h/w video was working. so
even though this isn't a fix at all, this is a workaround that you
might want to use in the short term.

as mentioned on IRC, you can download the firmware I built here
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B15TdtZYMJBbN2stYThkaWlkNDQ (md5sum
is c6de0da9abc502b001df2c92f6f3afab). it's the .xem3 file for DCE
firmware, you need to override the original one in /lib/firmware.

please report feedback if you see new issues, and also if it fixes
some problem we need to get feedback.

note that because of the upcoming holidays it might take a while until
this hits the PPA, but you can use this temporary firmware until PPA
is updated...

Hi,

ndec took care about this problem in irc.
The problems seems to be related to "aggressive" IVAHD power management.

There is a firmware available with that PM disabled.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B15TdtZYMJBbN2stYThkaWlkNDQ/edit?pli=1

Copy it to /lib/firmware/ti-firmware-ipu-dce.xem3

It did fix the problem for me: HW Video decoding is working now.

greetings,
Erik

Nice. But it didn't fix a problem for me, unfortunately. In fact, there was no change at all.
I have copied the file with force flag, so I am sure I overwrote it. Result - same error as before, after reboot of course.
I have tried totem and totem from terminal - slide show + same error. Tried all videosinks again.  Sudo doesn't affect also. Added execute permission to firmware - no effect.
I did try using gst-launch as Eric Andresen have used:

gst-launch filesrc
location="my video here"
decodebin ! fakesink (also tried pvrvideosink and dri2videosink)
This "somewhat" works. I am not sure if there is HW acceleration, but the video is certainly not full speed, but not a slide show at the same time. From the way system behaves, it seems processor is maxed out though. But the same videosink gives slidehow in totem.

Now, for the absolutely weird part: I have heard really good things about video playback on 11.10, which is supposed to be perfect. I tried Ubuntu 11.10, used the same card, but copied bootloaders from 12.04, as stock ones don't work and give me: "Gave up waiting for root device ...".
Anyway, to my surprise it booted, setup was successful, updated fully, installed Omap addons from "Release" repo, etc. However Wifi was weird (didn't see any devices, yet could connect manually), BT only paired - couldn't transfer files, PVR worked fine, but video HW gave me ... slideshow again ! Same videos, same commands.

So far, only 10.10 gave me HW acceleration. I think I will return to it.

Hi,

Try to start with gst-launch -v.
It should tell you the decoder used. When you don't see the ducati
plugin it is probably using a software decoder like ffmpeg, eg ffdec_h264.

You can check the version of the firmware with
md5sum /lib/firmware/ducati-m3-core0.xem3
This is the link to the file you copied and it should result it
c6de0da9abc502b001df2c92f6f3afab as in Nicolas post.

You can also check if your file is supported by Ducati.
I got my test file from

Erik

I would have expected you'd probably want a queue there after the
decoder before the sink, but...

can you make sure that $DISPLAY is set and you are able to open
connection to xserver (ie. launch xterm or some other simple x11 app)?
Normally just something like:

export DISPLAY=:0.0

first should do the trick. And second step would be to double check
that some simple GL app works (es2gears, glmark2-es, etc).

Both pvrvideosink or dri2videosink will need working DRI2..

my guess is that this necessitates a change on the m3 side too so GPT9
is handled to tickle the watchdog to keep it from expiring.. although
I'm not entirely sure where this is handled.

Hi, Rob
I suspected that.
It was advise of Russian TI's support :)
We signed NDA with TI but still haven't Ducati sources so support advised just change timer number on kernel side.
We need GPTIMER9 for LCD PWM backlite on Variscite's OM4460 SOM.

there is no update available for 12.10 as of yet, and it's not really
planned in the short term neither.

Only 12.04 is supported with this PPA.

Hi,

Yes, the BIOS-side would need some changes. The Watchdog functionality is dependent on the BIOS-side refreshing the timer and the timer addresses and clkCtrl base addresses are supplied through the Watchdog.xs file.

GPT9 and GPT11 are used for the watchdog timers for Core0 & Core1 respectively. The addresses need to be changed in Watchdog.xs to reflect the proper timer.

That said, switching to GPT10 will cause a lack of an exception back trace on watchdog error as GPT10 is not capable of generating an interrupt back to the M3 core.

The BIOS-side IPC code is publicly accessible, so you should be able to browse it @ http://git.omapzoom.org/?p=repo/sysbios-rpmsg.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/master. Use rpmsg-1.20 branch if your Linux kernel is based on a 3.0 or 3.1, and master for 3.4.

Do look at src/ti/deh/Watchdog.xs. The /sys/kernel/debug/remoteproc/remoteproc1/version may yield a commit id of the rpmsg base tree used.

Hi,

Kernel 3.2.0-1423-omap4 is the one delivered by Ubuntu/Canonical.
If you want to use TI OMAP Rlease PPA, you indeed need to install the complete set of packages selected with ubuntu-omap-extra package, including the 3.4.0 kernel.

Please help me as I need to somehow get gstreamer working, and I think part of the reason is the pipeline. Do I need to update the kernel to 3.4.0? Thanks

Hello,

It looks like you have configured a wlan network in one case (1489) and not in the second one.

Can you click on Network Manager applet to see the list of network?
Sometimes the applet is not really up to date, I often need to restart network manager to have the list:
sudo service network-manager restart

Then choose one Wifi network and connect.
On next reboot the connection will be done automatically.

Kindly help me figure out the mistake and how could I make my wifi work. Find attached dmesg logs for both the versions

Thanks.

Hi Xavier,

I am using omap ubuntu server 12.04, so there is no network manager. The network interfaces for both the instances is excatly same, which is as follows:

/etc/network/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid mynetwork
wireless-key 1234567890
wireless-mode managed
wireless-channel 11

As soon I installed the new version and following your instructions, I got an error regarding /etc/resolv.conf not being symlink when i tried restarting the network interfaces with wifi settings. So I tried fixing the error following this link 'www.hbrobotics.org/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_and_Configuring_Ubuntu_on_the_PandaBoard' but still the wifi does not seems to work.

It would be great if you could help me debug the root cause and why this could happen.

Thanks.

Regards,
Rahul

Hi Xavier,

The wireless started working. After resolving symlink issue(creating /etc/resolv.conf as symlink to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf), I installed wireless-tools(sudo apt-get install wireless-tools) and did a network scan(sudo iwlist wlan0 scan).  The wireless driver started working and it authenticated with the router successfully. Now post reboot it works perfectly fine.

Thanks.

Regards,
Rahul

no plan, sadly. most people from TI side involved on that project
aren't going to be 'on TI side' much longer. and since we won't get
access to the source code of the infamous binary blob, i am afraid it
might get stuck here for some time.

Hi,

when I use this PPA with precise, how can i recompile the kernel afterwards? Because I need touchscreen support for the 10" chalk-elec TFT.

Tried the rcn-ee.net version of Ubuntu where touchscreen support is already in the kernel. ubuntu-omap-extras installs here, but the kernel isn't switched and thus the pvr-omap4-dkms module is not built. (But changing the kernel would bring me to the same problem, as touchscreen support is lost in the kernel version of this ppa)

So how do i recompile your kernel when I use the original ubuntu sources?

you can cross compile from git, see

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone seen this problem before?  I can still repeat the kernel crash "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0xXXXXXXXX."

I am able to repeat this problem by opening a web browser viewing a local html5 test file + using totum to play big buck bunny @ 1080p.

If there's anything I can do to help get more debug information, please let me k now.

Regards,
Bob

Hi,

I'm running 12.04 just fine, but when I install the TI extras, my system becomes terribly unstable.  It appears to crash under heavy network load (scp 1 GB file).  Is anyone out there experiencing a similar problem?
