PSI prefers js to load web fonts?

I am busy with a web performance course and need to optimize a small app. I tried three methods for importing a web font and PageSpeed Insights gives the highest score for the js method.

1. link in the html

2. @import in the css

3. async loading via js

I expect the three methods to be equivalent, because this article says font loading is deferred until after render tree construction. Is PageSpeed Insights correct in its preference of the js method?
