I read earlier this year that this was overcome, but now i receive
PageSpeed Insights received a 500 response from the server. To analyze pages behind firewalls or that require authentication

on desktop.
what exactly is this?

The error means you have to log in to see your site.

No one can help you without a URL. = )

I see a 404 for your missing favicon.

/berkshireeventsguide/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/favicon2.png

I refreshed the page and found some 502's:
/gen_204?ct=fjhebtyn
/gen_204?ct=irjpqove

You might try fixing the link to your favicon and try a test page without ads.

Well changed my DNS settings from my ISP to google DNS and it works, seems ongoing issues with BT DNS in UK

Yes, 404 and 502 errors are fixed now.
