Don’t forget the upcoming Allen lecture in Archaeology to be held on the 25 August at the Melbourne Museum from 6-7.30 pm (with refreshments to follow).  Associate Professor Richard Cosgrove will be presenting a lecture entitled “Modern people, isolation and the evidential challenges to Dr Jones Tasmanian Legacy.”

For more than 100 years the history of the Tasmanian Indigenous people has been fertile ground for debates about the constitution of modern human behaviour. Much of the discussion has been negative; a small population of hunter-gatherers cut off by the rising seas and isolated on an island, abandoned by the ‘developing’ world. This talk will challenge these notions through re-examination of the bases of these prejudices and discuss the evidence that has emerged over the last 25 years.
