Hello Julian,

Seen on plain west of Bourke ... getting much more towards the Gunderbooka (Gundabooka) ranges than Bourke itself.

In northern bank of a small washout .. holes looking like wombat holes in size but infilled with dirt.

Started me off on a search for how far west are/were traces of wombats found.

Also in general NW NSW region were found of interest ... giant mudcracks (appreciated only from airphotos - but we tracked them down on the ground and confirmed them (I forget the dimensions but really immense --- likely recorded somewhere by Irwin Slanksky) and of course the many many mounds that some have thought were Aboriginal origin but geos of the Geological Survey cooked up  theory for as nest of big extinct birds.    This (re the mounds) has been discussed before on Ozarch.    Still now absolute conclusions (one geo has collected many hundreds of occurrences he says, from SW QLD through NW NSW and into SA).   The theory that big birds made them is published at least in mention, and giving some specific location/s I believe.

Cheers,  John Byrnes

"I think I have related before about finding the big sub-fossil ?wombat holes on the plain west of Bourke, well towards Gundabooka ranges.    Another of the unsolved little things out west.

Cheers, John"

Would you be able to tell us a little about these sub-fossil (possible) wombat holes? That sounds very interesting.

My apologies if you have already done so here and I missed it.
