EPA has asked the council to map the 1960s-80s landfill at Black Hill Ballarat. I wonder if this could it also have earlier deposits, given its location in near early mining area.

Ah yes ... the beautiful Black Hill tip, or part thereof.

I have asked Council:   What was there before the tip?

Behind the man see a road.

Over the other side of that road see a green area .. park or playing field.

Over there the Council or someone did NOT zone for residendial building.

But keep on going .. over to the other side of the green grassy area and you get into streets and that is the Leerama estate.

And we are told that a Mr Robert Brookes said when he worked there 1991 ( now the site of 21 houses) he often dug out large mounds of trash including rubble and plastic.  "When I was digging stuff out, I could smell all the gases coming out of the ground," he said.  "As they started building more blocks for the housing, more and more was coming up. There was a hell of a lot of it there.  "The land developers should have been on to that straight away because they knew it was there, but why didn't they say something?   How did they even get permits to build houses on it?"

Of course I suppose everyone knows where Black Hill is?

We are talking BALLARAT surrounds ..... a major centre of the Gold Rush (1850+) and still a VERY big gold mine (is it still working?) .... and a major heritage attraction (Sovereign Hill)  ... not to mention Eureka rebellion there (has anyone dug up any bullets there?).

I append black-hill-4.jpg

That shows a valley turned over by gold miners, at the foot of Black Hill.

Cheers,

John
