Hello,

I've just installed OsmAnd on my android phone (Honor 6X) with the purpose of following gpx tracks while riding my motorbike.

I am actually generating the route using Google MyMaps, downloading the kml file and converting it to GPX.

I can import the gpx file in OsmAnd and start navigation on the track but after some Kilometers OsmAnd start painting the track with yellow (before I can just see all red dots on the tracks which I suppose are the waypoints) and he keeps saying "intermediate point reached" and show a wrong distance to get to the arrival point (something like 100 Kilometers instead of 5/6 kilometers as he was saying before this issue).

I am attaching the gpx file.

Any idea on how to solve this issue?

Thanks.

Andrea.

I looked at it and believe this is a gpx route with only turn points. You want a gpx track. Consider using ridewithgps.com and export gpx track to osmand.

Hello,

thanks for your reply. I think that this issue is not due to the gpx file having only turn points as I can see a lot of points also while moving on "straight" parts of the route.

I'll try to convert the kml file using babel instead of ITN and I'll be back with the results later today.

I tried using ridewithgps.com but I did not manage how to create a custom route.

Please find attached some screenshot which will clarify the issue I am describing.

Screenshot_20180803-094532.png: everything was working fine. Red dots on the gpx track aso on straight parts

Screenshot_20180803-094632.png: track filled with yellow. Wrong distance to final point

Screenshot_20180803-094754: violet color appears indicating already passed red dots. Keeps saying and displaying "Intermediate point reached" or something similar

Screenshot_20180803-094940: same as above but is also indicating (in yellow) a road which was not in the original gpx track.

Thanks for the support.

Andrea.

There's no way to use Babel to convert a Kml in a gpx file readable from OsmAnd.

With Babel I can use two exporting profiles which are Garmin Training Center (GPX) and XML GPX. For bth of them OsmAnd keeps saying that the file is not readable.

Any hope to get a working gpx file? I am in a rush because otherwise I'll have to buy a Garmin device...

Andrea,

I will use simple English first.  Your file is a gpx route. It is not a gpx track.  Load the attached file into Osmand.  It is a gpx track and should run correctly.

More complicated English:  your first screenshot shows the route calculation progress bar (thin grey bar with short blue segment).  It also shows a street name of SR6.  These are not features of Osmand GPX track navigation.  It is a feature of Osmand point to point navigation.  You're telling Osmand to calculate it's own route between each of the starred points. I don't think this is what you desire.  The last screenshot shows a long straight line that is not on any road.  This is a mistake.  I removed it.

Street names can be provided to you, but you will need to install another app for this feature.

So, basically which application I have to use to correctly convert a kml file into a gpx track?

Is there any appropriate tool to do that?

Thanks.

Hello Robert,

Thanks a lot for your efforts so far.

Using the file you've sent me solved almost all the problems.

Just some small issue maybe due to the fact that I still can't use properly the app.

OsmAnd indicates turns where there are only curves; moreover the map was not rotating while I was following the track.

Is there a way to fix this small issues?

Now I have to learn how to properly build a track instead of a route.

Any help? 😊

Andrea.

When you follow a GPX, OsmAnd notes the curves. Whereas when you create a route from within OsmAnd itself, the app will give you road-oriented, turn-by-turn navigation.  This video shows how this is done using hiking trails, but the same idea applies to navigating roads: https://youtu.be/o84C0z3Kydc

To get the map to rotate as you move, see  settings/Map orientation.

@Bart,

Congratulations on producing that superb video.  It's really top notch work.  Way to go.  When viewing the screenshots provided by the OP, I immediately realized from the progress bar that Osmand was calculating the route on the fly between points.  I think he wants to create a gpx track for Osmand to follow rather than use Osmand to navigate between distant waypoints.  Creating waypoints at each turn point is not the way to go for long road trips.  The easiest way I know to do that is with RideWithGPS.com.

Andrea,

I suggest that you use a computer and practice a bit using the free version of RideWithGPS.  After you have a created and saved a route, choose the Export tab and select GPX Track (.gpx).  Then send that file to your phone using email, usb, or some other method.  Osmand will open automatically when you select the download.  There are many functions of Osmand to understand.  It takes time, but it's worth the effort.   For orientation to direction of movement, just tap on the compass arrow on the middle left of the display.

Hello guys,

thanks again for your support.

I would like to use OsmAnd to follow a custom made route like this I've created some months ago using Google MyMaps.

I just want the software following the track I don't want OsmAnd to calculate its own route between wayponts.

As far as I've understood I have two choices:

- building the route using the app (it will be really hard as I often build tracks of something like 1500 Kms)

- using Ridewithgps exporting the gpx file.

It seems that I have to learn how to use ridewithgps.

Andrea.

@Robert--thanks, much appreciated!  And I take your points.  I realize I've only followed GPX tracks, not routes. And I didn't know that some programs (like ridewithgps), will export what is essentially a planned route as a track.

As you become familiar with RWGPS, you will realize that you just need a few clicks along the intended path.  Don't click on intersections.  You're not creating the turn points, the program does that for you. This is different from the way Google MyMaps works.

Andrea, you can just upload your kml file from MyMaps directly into RideWithGPS.  Then choose Export/GPX Track and send the file to the Osmand app on your phone as you did previously.  It's easy.

With the friends in my cycling club I just provide a link such as this to a ride that I've designed:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28258809

I can also just send you the gpx file that this program created and named indicazioni114.4mi.  See attached.  Good luck.  As I think about it, I realize that this all could have been accomplished just using a smartphone.

Hello Robert.

I've just uploaded a .kml file in Ridewithgps and exported it in gpx.

I'll test it this evening while getting back from the office and I'll let you know. :-)

Hello,

the track exported from Ridewithgps.com worked out flawless.

It keeps indicating curves like it would indicate turns as previously noted but it's not a problem.

Thanks for all the support.

I am going to contribute buying OsmAnd+.

Very good, Andrea. I'm glad it all worked out. If you don't want the curves indicated and announced there are alternative apps. Ride safe out there.

There is a possibility to use BRouter, either as a local Android
application, either its web frontend, which can generate the GPX file with
voice hints for crossroad/junction turns.

In LocusMap, these hints are possible even if Brouter app is used as the
local 3rd party routing service.

OSMAnd can work in the same way, but unfortunately it cannot process these
hints via its interface to router yet.

Andrea, there are two ways that I use frequently.  If you upgrade to RideWithGPS Basic, you can use the RWGPS android app for turn by turn directions with street names and only a few announcements heading into curves.  However, the Track Navigator free app for Android performs almost identically.  Both apps require that you first create a route on RWGPS (do not try to upload kml files).  Although both apps work fairly well, there are display differences.  Only Osmand provides precise rerouting information if off course.
