Backup folder created upon OrientDB restart

We run a distributed OrientDB (2.0.15) with three nodes. When we restart one, sometimes it move the existing database to a databases/../backup/databases/<DATABASE-NAME> folder before syncing the entire database again. Why does this happen, and more importantly, how can we prevent it? We run on Ubuntu 14.04 and use a simple upstart script to start and stop OrientDB.
