OWL was supported by Sun until they were bought out by Oracle. Therein
lies the beauty of Open Source. Since the team and project was
disbanded, they could just fork the existing code and since then many
improvements have been made. Had this been proprietary, then the code
wold have vanished with the official project.
Basically, OWL is what you make of it, like any other tool. To me, what
sets it apart is that if you are running Linux, as a server, then you
can run practically any Linux/Open Source app inside-world, for your
users to use live. Nor do you have to worry about licenses and getting
your pants sued off. Which is something you cannot do with OS X and
Windows, and you must have your license(s) in order to run a server on
the Internet I believe Nicole runs a Mac client though, so it is
cross-platform.
It will never replace Second Life nor High Fidelity as they are
completely different animals suited to a different purpose. :) Ric
