Hi there,

I've noticed many of the species listed in the 'species/__init__.py' file aren't included in the species in my database. For example I wanted to add a 'Freeman Maple' but it wasn't in the list of searchable trees. Is there a reason for this (i.e., are the species screened depending on where you're located)? I'm sure if I dug around a bit I could find out why but figured I'd ask (out of laziness)!

Cheers,

Mat

Mat,

You're right, the species list is based on where the map is located.

It's so we only include species for which we can calculate ecobenefits.

If you want to know the specifics, I suggest you look at https://github.com/OpenTreeMap/OTM2/blob/82aac771e5fe15ceeb3cd5e2bc40d16f84f3581f/opentreemap/treemap/instance.py#L102/

Thanks,
Michael

Okay, so you do this because for certain tree species, like the Freeman Maple, you haven’t added to the benefits calculator yet. I’ve made it so that all the trees are now included in the list but the benefits are only calculated for certain species, such as the Sugar Maple.

For my purposes, it seems better to have people adding the correct species, but not have the benefits calculated, rather than the incorrect species (with benefits).

Perhaps I can look through the literature and update the species list for which benefits are calculated.

Cheers,

Mat
